Racing Notes

Beaulivre: Beaidivre showed at Awapuni on Saturday that he possesses the quality of stamina, but he may always be best at distances short of the longest.

! Settlement: Settlement is an awkward horse n his races and he was not assisted in this respect at Manawatu last week by having the services of an apprentice. Later on he should pay his way. Baran: Baran was a real disappointment at Manawatu on Saturday, but he may be accorded a chance to make atonement in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. Bronzeshar: Bronzeshar, who ran second in the juvenile event at Tauranga last Saturday is the Bulandshar —Minnikin filly A. Goodwin has been training at Trentham for the Waikato sportsman, Mr A. H. Dember. She was taken north by her owner after the Wellington meeting for a spell and is being given a race or two before being turned out. Promising Hack: Among the hacks at Manawatu last week nothing impressed more ’‘than, Ecstatic, a three-year-old- Laughing' Prince filly, who is likely to take a 1 high place later on in open class, in' winning on Saturday she scored only, by a head, but she had the field 1 beaten a furlong off the post and was not forced right out. Pca>rl of Asia: Pearl of Asia, after her recent good form, will be allowed her chance in classic company in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday week. I Made Money: I Made Money, who had been doing well since joining A. H. McDonald’s stable a few weeks ago has gone amiss and it will not be possible to race him at Easter, says a Dunedin report. , Globe Trotter: I Judged on his last three races, Globe Trotter is not the horse he was earlier in the season. However, he will have another chance to give the lie to his recent efforts over the Easter holidays,! probably at Riccarton. Chances Ruined:

Cheval de Volee is reputedly brilliant in his races, but any chance he had of Reaching the front at Awapuni on Saturday was ruined by a slow start, and then a check when crossed early in the race.

Dungarvan: Dungarvan has been blistered and turned out for a short spell. He will probably resume racing towards the end of the winter.

Trebor’s Unique Trot: After suffering a break in his recent winning sequence on the opening day, Trebor came up once again to capture the Adderstone Handicap at Awapuni in his most convincing style. This was his last run among the hacks. So well has he been placed that he has secured three good stakes in hack company while running out nominations, and his nine wins in the gratae, including six in his last seven starts, have netted him no less than £llB5 for firsts alone, a unique performance, as horses move out of hack ranks as soon as they have earned £5OO, though they can still compete in all races for which they have previously been nominated. Before the order to pay out dividends was given Trebor’s connections, or rather his trainer and rider, had to go through the ordeal of a surprise inquiry for inconsistent running. The reason for his failure on the first day, with Deficit’s carrying the topweights off their legs, was quite obvious to most. The judicial committee accepted the explanation tendered, but the result of this solitary inquiry during the two days was that the backers of first and second horses had to hang about for over twenty minutes before being able to start collecting dividends. Trebor won with a characteristic run from the back.

Scion of Cup Winners: The two-year-old Night Pal, winner of the maiden event at Oamaru last week, has interesting breeding, as he is by Nightmarch from Palantua, both New Zealand Cup winners. Night Pal was a source of anxiety at the starts of his early races, but with travelling and racing he has made marked improvement, and both at Trentham recently and at Oamaru he gave little trouble and got away; smartly. Provided he carries on in the same strain, he bids fair to be I good class. Like his dam, he is owned’ by his breeder, Mrs W. Mackenzie of Dunedin, who is also racing Our Pal, I a year older brother to Night Pal. I
