Trotting Notes

Forbury Reverts: The Forbury Park Trotting Club has decided to revert to win and place betting.

Southern Chief: Southern Chief is now being trained by R. B. Berry at Yaldhurst.

Acuity Improves: It is claimed by a northern writer that Acuity is one of the most improved mares in training. Slow Class:

Major Guy went 2min 10 2-ssec to win from a 2min 21sec mark at Wanganui.

A Torrent of Speed:

The displav of speed given by Timworthy in the Kingstown Handicap at Timaru recently has brought him right into the public eye. He made a - bad break at the start, and with two furlongs covered he was hopelessly placed, among those in front of him being Wahnooka, Peggotty, Golden Eagle, Helen’s Bay, Blue Logan, and several other well-perform-ed trotters. However, when he did strike a gait he showed a phenomenal burst of speed, and was actually second into the straight, but naturally his earlier effort had left him without any punch and he faded in the final furlong. His brilliant run in the first mile was conclusive proof of his ability, and it is cnfy a question of his settling down to reach the bort classes. . Has Possibilities:

A filly full of possibilities, and In the right hands to develop them, is Be: tv Boop. She is a Sapling Stakes candidate by Jack Potts from Disappearance, therefore a half-sister to Prince Author and Avaunt. She is owned and trained by W. J. Doyle, of Doyleston, who went very close to winning the Sapling Stakes the year he ran Moana Tama to a head with Subsidy.

Should Improve Further: Prior to the opening of the nui Trotting Club’s annual meetings. Money Queen had not faced the starter, but she quickly showed promise by finishing third at her second appearance. On Saturday she contested the Ballance Handicap, and was never asked for her best to account for the opposition. Considering her limited experience it was a very impressive effort, and she should continue to be seen to advantage on the circuit. Money Queen is an aged mare by Peterwah from Elzear, blood that should certainly provide a highclass trotter, for both sire and dam were in the first flight of square-gait-ers a few seasons ago. She is owned by Mr E. C. McDermott, but is trained by L. F. Berkett at Nelson. Will Make the Grade:

Considering his limited experience Black Surprise is making strides towards a much tighter mark, and the manner in which he accounted for the Landon Trot Handicap at the Oamsru Jockev Club’s meeting on Saturday left little doubt that he is on the wav to better class. He was allowed to hold a position in behind the leaders for the greater portion of the journey, but once the pressure was applied he quickly made short work of the opposition. Tn all be has started on six occasions for two firsts, two thirds, and two unplaced efforts, so taking everything into consideration he shouM derive considerable benefit from the experience. . Fie is bv Great Bineen from a Houi mare, who is also the dam of a good performer in Gold Tinge.

Beau Vite’s Defeat: The defeat of Beau Vite in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes was the sensation of the meeting, for he was nearly three times as wen backed as anything else in, the Held. Alter standing up the leaders several lengths early, he made a valiant attempt to pull them back in the straight, but he was reaching for the ground when getting into top speed and he was unable to bridge the gap. Except that he galloped greemy while accelerating, Beau Vite had the run o f the race. He was second last early, but on the turn received a clear passage through without leaving the fence and he was on the inner of Sil-ver-Stick following Submission and Beaulivre entering the straight. He was making only slight impression on the leaders at the distance, but over the last furlong he settled better into his stride and he closed to a length of the dividend pair at the post. Submission repeated her handicap performance on the first day by leading from start to finish. Beaulivre futilely attempted to go round past her on the turn, and over the last furlong and a half she held this challenger re 7 solutely at bay to reach the judge still a head in front. This performance, on top of her first day’s stamps Submission as best of her sex this season. Though hard ridden all the way, she stuck to her task in the style of a very solid filly who would develop good" slaying ability next season. She is a full-sister to Honour, Episode, and Courtcraft, and she gave Mr G. M. Currie his sixth success in the race, the other victors having been Motley, Thaw, Episode, j Midinette, and Burnish. Beaulivre left no doubt that he possesses stamina. His performance was strictly the best in the race, carried the full stone penalty, along with Beau Vite, whereas Submission had only a 1 51b penalty. Only two colts have won this event yet under the full ' penalty. Silver-Stick was a place 1 prospect till well into the straight, I but he went over a bit of extra I ground and finally weakened into ' fourth two lengths away. Gayest Son, who lost his position after a couple of furlongs, was best of the others. Baran tailed the field throughout and beat only Fils de Vaals and Nora Gregor home. Fils de Vaals was second to Submission for a brief space in the middle stages. Considering that the track was not as fast as it has sometimes been in the autumn, the time, Imin 26 l-ssec, was exceptionally good, only a tick

outside of High Comedy’s race record since the distance was extended to seven furlongs in 1926, the year in which Limerick won in Imin 26 2-5 sec. RACING FIXTURES. March 30, April I—Hawke’s Bay J.C.
