BOMBING OF BRIDGE
IN LONDON. LONDON, March 29. Two men have been detained in connection with the Hammersmith bridge bombjng, where two time bombs blew away part of the superstructure of the centre of the bridge It is expected that the bridge will be closed to heavy traffic for three weeks. The overhead suspension girders are seriously damaged. Over 100 windows were broken in the vicinity of the bridge.
A man who was walking on the bridge footpath, - picked up a box, from which he heard crackles. He threw it into the river, the box exploding before touching the water. As the man left the bridge, a second explosion occurred on the other footpath. A car-hire firm reports that a chauffeur drove two men to the Thames, and stopped near the bridge. The chauffeur was held down. When the explosion occurred, the men disappeared.
(Received March 30. 7 p.m.) LONDON, March 30. The two men detained in connection ’ with the Hammersmith bridge explosions were charged under the Explosives Act. They were remanded. All of the Thames bridges are bein" guarded, and the river patrols have been doubled. A special watch will be kept at power stations.
