NEW HEALTH SCHEME

For Australia SYDNEY, March 17. Details of the Federal Government’s new national health plan, which it is proposed to substitute for the abandoned national insurance scheme, were explained at a meeting of representatives of the B.M.A. and the Friendly Societies, by the Treasurer (Mr. Casey), to-day. The principal, provisions are for payments of ninepence weekly by employers and employees, for all employed under industrial awards, up to a specified wage. Sickness benefits are to be on a family basis, of 15s per week for a man, 10s for his wife, and 5s for each child, with a limit of 40s. The Government will subsidise the scheme by £1,000,000 annually. The Friendly Societies and the B.M.A. will separately examine the scheme. CABINET RESPONSIBILITY. CANBERRA, March 18. Mr. Lyohs stated that the decision to abandon the National Insurance Act, and to substitute a new Act providing for health insurance, was made by the whole Cabinet.
