POTATO “WAR”

Tassie Rush TO FORESTALL N Z. I Aus & N.Z. Cable Assn.l (Received March 13, 10.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. March 13. The wholesale price of the best potatoes was reduced by £6 10s a ton in Sydney to-day Io £l6 per ton. A representative of the Tasmanian Rotate Board in Sydney denied that the Tasmanian growers had flooded the market with the object of choking out the New Zealand glowers. He said that the chief cause of the heavy shipment had been heavy rains, which had forced the growers to dig their crops, so as to avoid losing them. Last week fifty thousand sacks of •Tasmanian potatoes were sent to the mainland, a record. New South Wales Members of Parliament alleged potatoes were hidden in Tasmanian pits in great quantity. Sydney traders expressed the view that the relaxation of the embargo on New Zealand potatoes has come too late and that Australia now has sufficient supplies.
