SEVEN CASUALTIES In Motor Collision [Per Press Association] AUCKLAND, February 27. Seven persons, including two women and a baby, were injured when a motor-car crashed into the back of a stationary truck on the Great South road at Drury at 8 o’clock last night. One man died in hospital this morning as a result of head injuries. I The victims are:— Dead. I Errol Cox, married, aged 31, Rostrevor street, Hamilton, employed as a truck driver by Grinter Brothers, Mount Albert. Injured. Thomas Derrick, a farmer, aged 60, Pukekohe East. Facial lacerations. I Condition serious. | Mrs. Derrick, his wife, aged 52. Concussion and facial lacerations. Condition serious, but slightly better to-day. W. Wilson, Main Highways traffic inspector, arm and hand injured. Not serious. Theodore Manuel 'Noyer, a labourer, of Devonport. Jaw and nose injured. Not serious. Mrs. Noyer, his wife. Eye cut. Not serious. Their 20 months old child suffered slight shock. The truck had been stopped opposite the Drury School by Inspector Wilson to weigh the vehicle, and while the inspector and the driver, Cox, were talking, the car crashed into the rear of the truck, which was laden with heavy machinery and galvanised iron piping. The projecting ends pierced the car, smashing the windscreen. One pipe pierced the door, and another the front seat, narrowly missing a woman, and pinning her clothing to the seat of the car. The passengers suffered severely from flying glass, especially Derrick and his wife, who were in the front seat of the truck. The driver, who had his back turned to the approaching car, was hurled on to the projecting ends of the pipes, and his clothing was pierced. He was extricated with difficulty. ■, '

Inspector Wilson saw the car coming and jumped away, but he was thrown by the mudguard to the ground. The school became a temporary hospital. Mr. Cox and Mr. and Mrs. Derrick were later admitted to the Auckland Hospital. The car was wrecked. CYCLIST INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, February 28. Head injuries were suffered by. a cyclist, Mrs. Hoskins, of 23 Gresford street, when she was involved in a collision with another cyclist at the corner of Oxford terrace and Manchester street at 7.50 p.m. yesterday. She received treatment from the St. John Ambulance Brigade and was removed to the Christchurch Public Hospital, from which she was discharged later. FALL FROM SCAFFOLDING. CHRISTCHURCH, February 28. When the scaffolding collapsed at a building on which they were working at the corner of Mowbray and Falsgrave streets yesterday afternoon, W. Dell, of. 118 Chester street, and R. Eastwick of Ailbermarle street, Sydenham, fell 15ft. to the ground. Both were treated by the St. John Ambu-

lance Brigade and removed to the Public Hospital, from which Dell was later discharged. Eastwick was reported to be in a satisfactory condition last night. CHILD DROWNED. CARTERTON, February 28. Harry Walter Neilsen, ten-year-old son of Mr Jack Neilson, was drowned in the Municipal Baths. Although 30 or 40 swimmers were present, and the caretaker was in charge, the boy's disappearance was not noticed till his elder brother reported that his clothes were still in the shed. . Deceased was found, near the middle of the baths, half an hour later. Artificial respiration had no effect. Motor * Crash 'TWO TNJURED. HASTINGS, February 28. Serious injuries were sustained by two Napier men when a car crashed on the Napier-Taup Road, near Rangitaiki, at midday to-day. The victims were R. H. Weekes and John Cotter ill. 1 An ambulandei was despatched from Napier to bring the injured men to the hospital. Details are unavailable.
