HUGE ROBBERIES
New York Subways CITY EMPLOYEES ALTER TURNSTILE INDICATORS. LAus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received January 17, 8.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 16. The theft during the past three years of twenty-four million nickels (1,200,000 dollars) from the municipal subway system of New York was revealed with the arrest of two change booth clerks, who are alleged to be| members of a ring of thirty employees. District Attorney Dewey said that the conspiracy, which had netted the members 1500 dollars daily at its height, was carried out through cooperation between a number of the maintenance men, who turned back the turnstile indicators before handing the collections to the clerks. The thefts involved fifteen subway stations. Additional arrests are ex,pected.
