N.S.W. SHIPWRECK. SYDNEY, January 17. Wireless advice has been received from the master, that the small wooden coastal vessel, Belbowrie, 218 tons, ran on a reef off Maroubra Point, about 9 o’oclck last night. He urgently required help, otherwise he would have to abandon the ship. The pilot vessel Captain Cook immediately went to the scene, about four miles south of Sydney Heads. The Belbowrie later broke in two, and is believed to be a total loss. The crew were not rescued by the breeches buoy, as at first reported, but made their’ way, hand over hand, along a rope, through 60 feet of boiling surf, to the shore. Captain Dixon was the last to leave the ship. He became exhausted, while still over the water, and with the cry, “I’m done! he let go the line and fell into the surf. A number of men dashed in and dragged him to the land, GERMANS FLY TO AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, January 16. The German Air Force lieutenants, Pulkowski and Jcnnett, completed a leisurely flight, this evening at Mascot aerodrome, Sydney, 28 days out from Germany. They flew a tiny Afado monoplane, and reached Darwin on Saturday night, Winton yesterday, and the final stage to Sydney to-day. WATERSIDE DISPUTE. SYDNEY, January 17. 'l’he waterside workers at Woolongong, last night, failed to agree on the acceptance or rejection of the basis of settlement of the pig-iron dispute. The meeting was adjourned. •... ..
BATHURST PRISON DISTURBANCES. SYDNEY, January 17. Two prisoners, responsible for attacks on warders at Bathurst gaol, were each sentenced to 28 days’ solitary confinement. A third prisondr was sentenced to ten days’ solitary confinement. The prisoners who created the disturbances last week have been removed to other prisons throughout the State. The hunger strike ended when the prisoners realised that the authorities would not take any notice of their refusal to eat.
