The Kaitoa sails for Nelson to-day with a cargo of coal and is expected back about Thursday to load again for Nelson, The Rata is due from Wellington on Thursday to load coal for Nelson and Tarakohe. The Canopus is due to arrive from Auckland to-night and loads for return to the same port. The Te Aroha arrived- from Wellington this morning and is discharging general cargo, expecting to be' despatched for Little Wanganui to-1 morrow morning, thence Wellington.
The Kaimai is still detained in the roadstead but may enter port at high, water this afternoon, and will load I 2oal for Lyttelton, Oamaru, Bluff and Dunedin. The Poolta is bar bound off Greynouth. After part-loading' at Grey ;he is due here to complete the load for Napier and Gisborne. The Karepo sailed from Gisborne last night and is due to load coal on Thursday for Portland arid Auckland. The Wingatui is expected to sail from Wellington this evening with' general cargo, and loads coal on 1 Thursday for return to Wellington. | The Kakapo is expected to arrive from Wellington on Wednesday, 21st. inst., to load coal for Wellington. | The Gabriella is expected from Wei-., l.ington .about Thursday, "22nd. inst., to load’ coal for Auckland and Port Whangarei.
Personal: Miss Martin, has returned from a holiday visit to Auckland. Mrs. R. Thurlow, Hamilton, is visiting relatives in Westport. Mr. and Mrs. McWha, who have been visiting England and Ireland, returned to Westport last evening. Mr. C. Duke, architect, of Nelson, is visiting Westport. Mr. J. Newman, managing director of Newman Bros.’ Motor Services, arrived from Nelson yesterday on a visit to the firm’s branches. Mr. Jim Sutherland, of Christchurch, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Sutherland, Westport, was the winner of the Linwood Football Club’s trophy; for the most improved second grade player. The trophy has been receiv- 1 ed by his parents.
Card Party: The card tournament and dance held in the Friendly Societies’ Hall on Saturday night, was well attended. Mrs. Curtis supplied the music at the dance, and Mrs. A. Dayman was M.C. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss E. Borlase and Mr. Hogan. The euchre tournament was won by Mr. Lewis, with Mr. Jackson second and Mrs.- M. Collins third. The 45’s prize was won by Mr. Aguirre. Last evening the “harq” card tourney attracted a record" attendance, the lucky winners being Mrs. Alford 1, Mrs. Swan 2, and Mrs. Perkins 3. Mrs. S. Marshall won the 45’s prize. The ladies’ committee served a dainty supper.
Labour Sports Committee: A meeting of the Holland Memorial Sports Committee was held in the Labour Rooms yesterday morning, Mr. H. Stephen presiding. Those present were: Messrs J. Adams, M. Hunter, P. Adank W. Peterson, J. Erskine, J. Hay-Mackenzie, A. T. Ridsdale, and W. H. Woodcock. Messrs J. McEnaney and A. Pain were present on behalf of the Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. Apologies for nonattendance were received from W. Champion and D. Pearsbn. The secretary, Mr. ißidsdale, mentioned that indications pointed to a successful meeting on December 28th. Inquiries for programmes were received from many axemen following publication of the programme in the “Gazette. ’ So far 40 nominations for the chopping and sawing were received, but as several intending competitors had overlooked sending in their forms, he suggested that the closing date be extended until Saturday, December 17th. The secretary’s suggestion was adopted. Mr. McEnaney referred to the big programme of cycling and was of the opinion that difficulty might be experienced in getting the events off. The matter was discussed and was referred to a special meeting of the committee to be held'to-night. Arrangements in connection with the soft drink stall, etc., were referred to the Ladies’ Committee.
Federation of Labour: A meeting of the Buller District Council was held on Saturday, Mr. W. P. Jackson presiding. The following delegates were present: J. Fairbairn (A.S.R.S.), W. P. Jackson (R.T.A.), H. Stephen, J. Wilcox (Gen-, eral Labourers), H. Lanney, R. McGregor, H. Swan (Cascade), D. Edwards (Denniston), L. McKendry (Charming Creek), W. Battershall and M. Lavery (Stockton). A communication from the Federation regarding the appointment of an additional representative on the Arbitration Court, was received, also one in connection’with rates of pay by local councils. A discussion took place regarding representation of Trades Councils at the annual conference and the opinion was unanimously held that Trades Councils should have representation with the right to participate in discussions and also to vote, the Federation of Labour to bear all expenses. Hon. W. Nash wrote in connection with the benefits of the Social Security Act. The letter was received. Mr. P. M. Butler was appointed the Council’s nominee as delegate to the Labour Conference at Geneva. In the course of a discussion on the interchangeable ticket, the secretary, Mr. R. McGregor, explained that only three organisations, the N.Z.W.U., freezing workers and
general labourers, were giving their co-operation in the scheme. The acition of the officials in deciding against ; the sending of an extra delegate to | the annual conference was endorsed. [The president and secretary were au11horised to go into the matter of the purchase of a typewriter. The meeting decided that every support should be accorded newspapers supporting the policy of the Labour Government, and delegates agreed to place the before - their- respective Unions. Mr. R. McGregor, delegate to the National Council meeting, held at ’ the Trades Hall, Wellington,-.on November 22, gave a comprehensive report of the business, which occupied close on three hours, and at the conclusion was accorded a vote of- thanks carried by acclamation. The meeting adjourned after an all day sitting.
Nelson Education Board: The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held on Monday. Members present were the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (chairman), Messrs Harkness, Hamilton, Carling, Barltrop, Knapp and Wilkins. Accounts totalling £7,715 were passed for pay'jment. The tender of R. Yellowlees I j was accepted for erection of the .Alexj ander River new school. The EducaI tio.n Department approved of the 'erection of an additional classroom at ! Inangahua Junction. Murchison Committee wrote asking that a school be placed on the urgent list of rebuilding works. The Board . decided it was not possible to justify erection of a new school at Murchison, but instructed the architect to prepare
.plans for remodelling and- report to i next meeting. The Board instruct;ed the Secretary to write the Depart'ment, asking for an urgent grant to , build an additional classroom at I Reefton owing to overcrowding at the school. The Board, expects the approval shortly of the Minister for’ the acquisition of sections at Westport for two new school sites, and the chairman and secretary were instructed to visit Westpdrt early next year to consult the school committee about plans to submit to the Public Works' Department for preparing those two sites for the erection of the inew school buildings. The Board agreed to the transfer of part section ' 1067, Westport, from Mrs. A. Scandrett to Alan Scandrett. The Birchfield Committee was granted £3 towards' ground improvements. Miss B. Woods, of Ngaio, was appointed sccondarv assistant at Granity High
! School. Miss O. Costello, was appointed' assistant' mistress' and specialist in physical culture at Westport'. The position of infant mistress at Westport is to be re-advertised. NomI inatidns will close on November 20 for the election of a member for East Ward, caused by the retirement of Mr. E. J. Scantlebury. The election takes place on the 10th. of January, 1939. The Oparara Committee forwarded a letter agreeing to consolidation with Karamea, and this has been forwarded to the Depart-
iment for approval, ine noara gianted a new stove for the teacher’s residence at Millerton. The following I Buller applicants were appointed to the Training College next year: Athol Anderson, Westport; Eric Coulston, Waiuta; Frank Goldsmith, Westport; Alexander Mclntyre, Millerton; Beryl Monahan, Murchison; James Orman. Millerton); Joy Rasmussen, Westport; William Rennie, Granity; Richard stead, Denniston. . Twenty-seven Training College candidates were appointed and one candidate’s application was referred to the Department. The Board’s Training College quote is twenty-eight. Mr. Howard Prosser was appointed sole teacher at Mangarakau. On the recommendation of the Chairman, the Board decided, subject to Ministerial approval, to hold the March meeting at Westport during the last week in March. The following probationary assistants to the West Coast schools for 1939 were appointed—Denniston: John Burt; Granity, Miss Joan Davis; Reefton, Miss Mary Thompson; Westport, Miss Mavis Monahan and Alan Broad. Extra Probationary Assistant: Murchison, Miss Gertrude White. The Secretary reported that there were 36 supernumary teachers from Training College, for whom positions had yet to be found. St. Andrew’s Bible Class:
The Bible Classes of the St. Andrew’s Church held a 1 break-up banquet and social in the hall on Saturday evening, the Rev. H. L. Wilkinson presiding. Guests of honour were Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson, snr., and Mr. F. N. Downard. The following toast list was honoured. The Royal toast, “The Church,” proposed by Mr. Downard and responded to by the Rev. Wilkinson; “Senior Girls’ Class,” proposed by Mr. R. Hodgson, replied to by Miss Hilda Parfitt; “Senior Boys,” Miss Ida Lowden and Mr. J. Cooper; “Junior Boys,” Miss Joyce Hart and Mr. Proven, leader of the Junior Boys’ Class; “Junior Girls, Master L. Hart and Miss Gwen Hodgson. During the evening games and competitions took a prominent part, and the Rev. H. L. Wilkinson delighted all with a solo, “The End of the Road.”
Band Concert: The Westport Municipal Band will give an open air concert on Tuesday evening at 7.30 on the Post Office corner. A splendid programrne has been arranged, and includes the following numbers: —March, “8.8. and C.A.”; march, “Tasma”; march, “Farewell, My Comrades”; hymn, “Nearer My God to Thee”; waltz, “Dpnauwellen”; euphonium solo, .“In Cellar Cool”; cornet solo, “Last Rose 6T Summer”; trombone solo, “Far Away.”
