The figures at present are;— Butlei' (United Australia Party) 17,682 S. McHugh (Labour) ... .....; ' 17,290 P. Quirke (Independent) ... 10,624 Wakefield was regarded as airhost an impregnable stronghold, and the voting shows the decided swing against the Lyons Government. The majority of Mr Quirke’s preferences arc exported to go to Mr McHugh Mr Butler said: “The big swing against me was caused by the bickerings and recriminations in the;’federal Cabinet.
