Mr C. W. Salmon leaves this morning on return to Wellington. Mr C. C. Davis leaves this morning on return to Auckland. M. ,Grataresco, ex-Premier of Roumania, has been appointed as first Ambassador to France. Mrs L. Tenton, of Melbourne, has arrived in Reefton on a visit to bet mother, Mrs J. Stevenson Senr. Mrs Baird, Senr, of Reefton is at present seriously ill, her condition causing her relatives anxiety. Mr P. G. Beary, who has been relieving Railways Yard Foreman, rt Greymouth, will leave to-day on return to Christchurch. Mr J. J. Mitchell, who has been on relieving duty on the Train Running staff, Railways Department, Greymouth, will leave to-day on return to Christchurch. ! Mr Frank Duffy, of Murray Street Greymouth, has been appointed superintendent of the Rescue Station which is now In course of erection at Dobson. Prior to his departure for England to join the Royal Air Force, Mr W Ashby, was farewelled by the staff of T. B. Baty, Ltd., and presented with a dressing gown.

The Minister of Railways (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) accompanied by Mrs Sullivan and Mr K. M. Sleight (private secretary) left on return to Christchurch by rail-car yesterday afternoon.

Mr. P. D. Scrimgeour, of Haines Motors, Ltd., Greymouth, has received advice from General Motors (N.Z.) Ltd., that he has been successful in winning the New Zealand Vauxhall Car Sales Contest, which has been running for the past two and a half months.

Mr G. H. Mackley, General Manager, New Zealand Railways, accompanied by his private secretary Mr W. I J. Munro, and Mr G. G. Stewart, pub'.licity manager, will leave this mornjfor Westport on departmental business, and will leave for Christchurch to-morrow, via the Lewis Pass en route to Wellington.

The Governor-General (Lord Galway) and Lady Galway arrived in Auckland from Lake Tarawera this afternoon. They were accompanied by the Hon. Mary and the Hon. Celia Monckton, and by Lieutenant S. R. Le H. Lombard-Hobson, R.N., and Captain R. Stuart French. Their Excellencies have taken up residence at Government House, where they will remain for some time.

The Dominion Council of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children (Plunket Society) announces the appointment oT Dr. Helen Deem to the position of Medical Adviser to the Council of the Society. Dr. Deem, whose husband was City Engineer at Wanganui until his death several years ago, is the eldest daughter of Sir Thomas and Lady Easterfield of Nelson.

The New Zealand Obstetrical Society will be represented at the Empire Conference of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Edinburgh in April 1939, by Doctor Doris Gordon, who sails on January 19. Doctor lan Ewart (Wellington) will oqcupy Dr Gordor* position as honorary Secretary during 1939, while Doctor Louis Levy (Wellington) will act honorary Treasurer. —Press Assn.

Mr J. H. Raleigh, of the Magistrate’s Court staff, Greymouth, who leaves this morning on transfer to the Head Office, Mines Department, Wellington, was fareweljecl by fellow members of the staff, press representatives and others and presented with a case of Loewe pipes. Suitable references were made to the departing guest who suitably replied. Occasion was also taken to welcome his successor, Mr O. T. Grattan.
