Racing Note? The Hat Trick? S. Wilson, who has ridden the winners of the last Auckland and New Zealand Cups, will try to make it three on end on Arctic King at Ellerslie. Recovered: Indian Sun, the half-brother by Bullandshar to Solarium and a stablemate of Baran’s, has • recovered from his earlier setbacks and will probably do his first racing over the holidays. .The Auckland Cup: The result of the Auckland Cup last years was: The Buzzer, 7.6, 1; Knight of Australia, 7.5, 2; Argentic, 8.11. 3; Kelly, 7.1, 4. Last Year’s Railway: The result of the A.R.C. Railway Handicap last year was:—Stretto, 7.4, 1; Ben Braggie, 8.7, 2;. Marie’s Acre, 7.5, 3; Orate, 7.6. 4. La Coquette: The-Rangitikei sportsman, Mr A. H. Marshall did well with the Chief Ruler—Lilimond mare Wildflower. He now has a good-looking filly by Beau pere from Lilimond to carry his colours. She bears the title of La Coquette and had her first race, at Feilding. Injured: Although she completed the course, Little Dorritt was galloped on during her race at Feilding last Saturday and she was in a bad way when pulled up. However, she was removed from the course in the hope that she could be saved for duty as a brood mare. Good Apprentice: G. R. Tattersail, who recently completed his apprenticeship with the Awapuni trainer G. W. New, rode three winners on the opening day at Feilding His anxiety to get Sporting Gift away to a good start on the second day resulted in hi s being stood down for two weeks, and he will now miss the Otakl and Woodville meet; ings. He had been booked for Old I Surrey in the final event and he was I allowed to fulfil the engagement.
Aged Horse: Some time ago the National Horse Association recorded that a horse known as Old Billy had attained the age of 62 years, which must surely be a record. It is recorded that an Australian horse, Parramatta, who died in 1874, was aged 53 when he died.
MELBOURNE CUP. SWEEP DRAWN IN PLANE. It is no exaggeration to say that. Australia as a nation ceases work for five minutes on the first Tuesday of November each year. That is the day on which the Melbourne Cup is run, an event which draws horse-racing enthusiasts not only from all States of the Commonwealth, but from over seas as well. Those not fortunate to Witness the race congregate round radio sets to listen-in to the broadcast description of the running. Tliat interest is not confined to those on
the ground was evidenced by the passengers in the Empire flying-boat, Centurion, which was en route between Townsville and Sydney on Ist November. Soon after leaving Brisbane a sweep was drawn, the result of the Cup was received by radio, •While passing over Newcastle, and before Sydney was reached three lucky passengers had collected their prizes.
