Mr George Arthur Murphy, aged sixty-nine, a farmer, of Hawera, died in the hospital yesterday as a result of injuries he received in a fall from a hay sweep on Wednesday. Mr Murphy had farmed near Hawera for many years. He leaves a widow and an adult family. DUNEDIN, December 3. The increase in rail fares from December 11 has led to an unprecedented rush fox- bookings at the tourist office. - This morning persons who are not travelling till the end of January were buying their tickets. AUCKLAND, December 3. As the outcome of representations made by the Drivers’ Federation to the Federation of Labour with respect to matters in dispute in general and the local body drivers’ awards, it is stated that the employers in the industry have agreed to meet representatives of both federations for the purpose of discussing alleged defects in the awards. .The conference is to be held at Wellington in about a fortnight’s time, and is looked on by drivers in Auckland as yet another attempt to settle grievances without resorting to direct action. The questions in dispute arise out of recent awards issued by the Second Arbitration Court and relate principally to hours. MASTERTON, December 3. A single man, Mr Charles Jensen, aged twenty-eight, of Mauriceville, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital late on Thursday night suffering from a gun shot wound in the right shoulder, which he received while he was carrying the gun in a paddock at the back of his parents’ residence early in the evening. His condition is not serious.
DUNEDIN, December 3. The City Corporation’s Tramways manager’s report on traffic receipts shows that the position from April 1 to November 19 (thirty-three weeks) compared with the corresponding period of last year reveals a loss in revenue of £979 or .80 per cent. The position is £8773 worse than at this period last year. The actual debit balance shown at October 12 was £5OBB. ’ PALMERSTON N., December 2. Severe injuries were suffered by a railway employee who was crushed between two trucks in the Palmerston North railway yard to-night. The injured man is Mr M. D. Burke, single, aged twenty-one, a junior porter, whose parents reside at Petone. His left thigh was crushed and he was admitted to hospital. His condition is ’serious. WELLINGTON, December 3. Final figures for the Licensing Poll, announced by the Gazette this week, show that of 906,334 votes cast, 546,995 were for Continuance, 96,131 for State Control, and 263,208 for Prohibition. In none of the seventy districts for which separate figures are shown was there any change in the aggregate position which gives a substantial majority for Continuance over- both the other two issues.

If the Christchurch Tramway Board felt inclined to go into the secondhand business, and could retain for sale articles found on cars, there would be no difficulty in keeping up stocks. During the year ended March 31 last, articles found on cars numbered 4235. a return placed before this
morning’s meeting of Hie board showed., Umbrellas took pride of place with 896, outnumbering by hundreds the next popular article to be lost f namely
purses and handbags (455). Well up in the list were parcels (403), pairs of gloves (389), single gloves (289), attache cases- (284) and miscellaneous clothing (220);
