MILLERTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent! Mr T. Cunliffe was conveyed to the Westport Hospital on Tuesday. Sister Maddison, of the Buller Hospital, has left to take a six months special course. Mr W. McDonald, of Christchurch, was a visitor to Millerton during the week-end and made a call on old friends on the Hill. Hon. W. H. Mclntyre returned from Wellington but left again for Westport to be present at the social tendered the Hons. P. C. Webb and R. Semple. Mrs A. Stewart is visiting Christchurch. Mr Kelly, of Christchurch, was a recent visitor to Millerton. The Westport Returned Soldiers’ bowlers team played the local bowlers in a Ballinger buckles challenge game. The weather was fine and quite a large number of spectators witnessed the play. Results of the rinks were as follows (Westport players first):— Newman, Ninnes and Morgan (s) 19 drew with Harker C. Orman, R. Jack and Russell (s) 19; McMillan, Moore, Comerford and Bouchope (s) 8 lost to Nicholl, Jones, G. Orman and Boswell (s) 30; Mitchell, McGregor, Trainer and Huddlestone (s) ,‘fB J°st to Fox, Calder, J. Orman (s) 27. At the conclusion of play, the President, Mr Harker congratulated the visitors on their fine display as a new club, and wished them every 'success in the future. The buckles were presented to Mr W. Boswell on behalf df his rink, that rink having the highest score. Mr A. Nicholl (District President) congratulated the visitors on their fine showing, and stated that it would take a_ good, side to take the buckles from the Hill, as jthe club intended to defend tha buckles with their best rinks at all times. Mr Mitchell spoke on behalf of the visitors, thanking the local bowlers for the fine reception they had given. They hoped at some future title to return to Millerton m quest of the trophy and, accomplish others had failed to do in the past. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Ladies’ Committee for their dainty af The °MHlerton miners resumed work on Monday after being idle for 12 days. The company manager met the Union president and secretary, Messrs W. Clark and R. Jack on November 25, and a settlement was arrived at, the men winning back local conditions which they had lost during the depression period. A Union meeting was held last Sunday and a report on the conference was given the men’s officials, which was accepted by the members. The National President ’ and Secretary, Messrs J. Devlin and A. McLagan were present, also Mr T. Muir (District National elegate) and the members of the District Council attended, viz: President and secretary, Messrs F. Connew and H. L. Evans; and Messrs W. Clarke, T. Edmonds, Smith and L. McKendry. The National Secretary gave a report on various issues, one of the most important being a sevenhour day for underground workers, which might be realised in the near future. A report on his interview with the Hon. P. C. Webb, in connection with the the making of a road to the Stockton mine, was also received. The Stockton Miners’ Union, for their action in condemning Mr Chamberlain’s policy and the Munich agreement, were congratulated by the National officials. The National Secretary said he was of opinion that, deputies and engineers employed by coal companies should be in the min-

ers’ organisation, and every endeavour should be made by the local Miners’ Unions to encourage them to link up. Mr McLagan said deputies and engineers would benefit by such a step, and he hoped in the near future this would be an accomplished fact. In regard to the safety hats, the companies had decided to pay half costs if the miners paid the other half. The National balance-sheet was discussed and received as satisfactory. A vote of thanks was accorded the delegates. The Buller Central Committee officials and the National Secretary will meet the coal companies’ officials and Mr T. O. Bishop in conference at Westport on December 9, to discuss numerous local disputes, rhe Buller Centre Committee met on November 28. The of the General Labourers’ Union held a meeting in Peggie’s Hall on November 30 (Mr R. Closs presiding) to discuss correspondence from the District Organising Secretary and the National Secretary. It was decided to communicate with Mr J. Wilcox Organiser and the National Secretary on important business. The chairman and secretary were appointed to interview the Hon. P. C. Webb when he arrived at Millerton.
