N.Z. TROUT FISHING

VISITING ANGLERS. AUCKLAND, December 1. The appeal of New Zealand trout streams and big-game fishing grounds for English sportsmen was shown when the Akaroa arrived at Auckland from Southampton. Among the passengers were several who regularly visit the Dominion in summer for its fishing, and in addition there were others whose intentions to test the country’s 'sporting possibilities were shown by the rods which were included in their Jjjggage. Lieutenant-Colonel G. S. Douglas, of Malabar, India, is an Englishman who makes regular visits to New Zealand for the fishing. He intends to spend three or four months in the country at Rotorua and Taupo, and may also do some quinnat salmon fishing. Colonel G. H. Davis, of the Indian Army, who is accompanied by Mrs. Davis, visited New Zealand last year, and said that the sport he had experienced drew him back again. He will not leave until next April. ' Although he has not visited the country for 12 years, Prebendary Alan Portman, a retired Anglican clergyman, said that he had not forgotten the excellent fishing New Zealand had given him last time. He had been told that it was still just as good. Dr. F. Hall, who lives in Sent, said he -was equally interested in fishing and shooting. He will spend most of his time fishing at Taupo, and will not leave again on his return until April or May. Dr. Hall has brought to New Zealand by thb Akaroa 24 old English black-necked pheasants. They are for the Napier Acclimatisation Sociey, and are to be used to strengthen the society’s breed. "I am quite sure there are fish of 10001 b. and more to be caught on the ‘big-game fishing grounds, and i am going to get,, one if I cari ■. this summer,” said Mr. H. White-Wick-ham, an American, who lives in England and visits New Zealand regularly every summer. He intends to spend a week in Auckland before going to Deepwater Cove, Bay of Islands. He will leave again for England in April.
