Trotting Notes

Torquemada: , Torquemada, a brother to Indianapolis, by Wrack—Estella Amos, won the Western Handicap at the Wayville meeting in South Australia on November 12. Over 10 furlongs his mile rate was 2min 19 2-ssec. He started at a price that should have given his backers a good win for a moderate outlay. Wilbur’s Heiress:

. F. J. Smith has an addition to his large string at Takanini in Wilbur’s Heiress, an aged pacing mare by Wilbur Lu. The newcomer hails from New South Wales, where she has had some experiences at shows, and she is still a novice.

Morello: Morello went a much better race in the Forbury Handicap than he did on the first day of the meeting. He had, however, to be content with second place to Logan Derby, whom he met on 12 yards worse terms than in the Trotting Cup at Addington-.--,-Fre'mont:

Fremont is a stylish-looking horse, showing a lot of quality in. conformation. He put up a track record to win the Tainui Handicap by winning in 3min 14 Msec' from a 3min 24sec mark. Fine Art:

Fine Art did not retain the track record he put up at Forbury Park, as Fremont stepped inside it when he won the Tainui Handicap. A Good Price:

The price paid by Logan Derby in the Forbury Handicap was improved by the fact that he had contracted an attack of colic after racing on the first day. He pulled up after the race without showing any signs of distress. He was timed to a middle halfmile in Imin lsec.

Big Author: Big Author is a bit doubtful at the barrier, but he made no mistakes in the Recovery Handicap, and after being well placed his pilot did not appear to . display any anxiety when keeping clear of Logan Derby in the run home, Logan Derby:

Logan Derby clipped the Forbury Park record by two-fifths of a second when he won the Forbury Handicap in 4min 18 2-ssec from a 4min 25sec mark. The time’ put' up is 4 2-ssec slower than what Ke put up at Addington. Too Much;

Logan Derby was asked to do rather too much when stepped- out for the Recovery Handicap, and although he made a- hold bid,. he failed to- show the required dash to win. He, however, did remarkably well for a horse that had been distinctly off colour after winning on the first day. Logan Derby has won £1645 in New Zealand, and so has gathered gold as well as glory.- : ’ 1 •• -.f ’ - Sela Gift: •

Sea Gift stepped a mile in 2min 13sec when setting the pace l in the Forbury Handicap. A Smart Half: Timing Logan Derby through sections of his race in the Forbury Handicap, the watch made him go the third half-mile in 61sec when he was speeding up t 0 gain a position. Star. Pronto: Star Pronto, the . Australian-bred free-legged pacer, is shaping well in his work at Auckland; and is expected to be in good shape for the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting. - ' ' - ' ' ' ' •

Lynn Rey: , ... The half-brother to Lynnworthy, Lynn Rey, is stated to be the best novice in. training in the norths and he is confidently expected to open his winning account in the near -future. Befxley Girl: . -./.•■ -.-••• .-

Bexley Girl showed, great promise as a stayer in her races at Addington, and she is likely to be one of the'favourites: in the big event at Waikato next. week. A success would bring her into line for the Auckland Trotting Cup. ’

Increasing Team: , M. Stewart is gradually increasing his .team, and two recent additions are Bayard-and Olive King. Both should be equal .to; paying their way. ifi the north. _

Walla in the Dominion, is down to make his first appearance at the Waikato meeting. He is under the care of N. Cunningham at Epsom, and is reported to have shown a useful turn of speed. 'j Fine Art: Although he was.-not produced on the second day, FiM Art took no harm from his hardglace the first day at Forbury next race -will probably be tlt@ Auckland Cup during the holidays.; l ® The Jack Potts gelding was responsive for one of the finest performances at Forbury Park for some he won the Caversham Handicap! in 3min. 14 4-5 sec. Running his -Isfst half-mile in 58 gee. on the outside of a field, he finished oh straight and true? and while he just got up to head Nell Grattan, it was a wonderful display of bril-1 liance and stamina, -j Off the limit of the Auckland Cup, a £l,OOO race, the Jack Potts pacer will take some beating if produced in.the same order.

Victim of Circumstaifces: Logan Derby, and |is driver, J. M. Stamford, were the victims of circumstances in the Recovery Handicap on the second day of the Forbury meeting, when Big Author beat the favourite. From back Logan Derby began quickly? and his driver rushed him up behiifd Graham Direct. Although Graham JMfect had gone off correctly he was notsloing his work as well as the leadersMit the head of which was GlenrossHjg The result was that at the end of dS-ee furlongs Logan Derby had- not/tecovered any of his handicap and had actually lost ground. It was dlrpost an impossible task he was set, but .his driver persevered with him arid yas within striking distance of the leaders two furlongs from home. He failed to catch Big Author/ but was far from disgraced. In the President’s Handicap, which he won egrlier in the day, Logan Derby was. driven a most unusual race.' With still a mile and a quarter to go his driver rushed him round the outside of the field into third place, and many thought that Stamford had mistaken the number of laps. - However, this was not so, and with three furlongs to go Logan Derby raced past the leaders and won comfortably. His displays at Forbury marked him a super horse.
