Grey Sub-Assn. ANNUAL MEETING. A forward move designed to encourage the smaller clubs was made at the annual meeting of the Grey Tennis Sub-Association, when It was decided to institute a new competition for these clubs. Mr A. L. McKay presided at the meeting and the following delegates attended: —Mrs R. Gilmour (Cobden Club), A. Millar and J. Cassels (United), T. Anlsy (St. Columba), A. Dyrhberg and O. Cheyne (Greymouth), B. Griffiths (Paroa) and H. Dodson (secretary). The following annual report was presented by the Management Committee: — The usual Easter tournament was held and some excellent tennis was witnessed. The entries were not as large as the previous year, main 1 *’ on account of there being no entries j.rom Hokitika. However, we had eight players from Canterbury, which added a lot to the interest in the tournament. During the year a sports excursion was held, and three teams travelled to Christchurch, being entertained by the North Beach, Sumner and Woolstqn Clubs. All players enjoyed themselves immensely, and it is the intention of the Executive to try and make this a bi-annual fixture. Our thanks are due to the Executive for the work put in
in arranging this excursion. It was mainly through their efforts that the trip was made possible. A team also travelled to Westport, defeating the Buller Sub-Association fairly easily. However, it was a splendid day’s tennis and our thanks are due to the officials of the Buller Sub-Association for their hospitality. We hope to play a return match early this coming season. The balance sheet shows the Sub-Associa-tion to be in a sound financial position. Very few matches were played for the district ladder, players taking little interest. It is to be hoped that some method of stimulating interest will be found this season. Unfortunately, the Runanga Club have intimated that they will be unable to play in matches this season. However, they now have new courts well under way, and should be playing in a week or so. This club is to be congratulated on their enterprise in putting down four new courts, and we wish them luck. Our thanks are due to the Press- for the very excellent manner in which they reported our activities for the season, also the ladies of the various clubs, who looked after the players so well on match days. The report and balance sheet, showing a credit of £9 16s, were adopted. The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association wrote regarding the sports excursion last season, and stated that it hoped to be able to send a team to the West Coast this year. Prior to the election of ’officers. Mr McKay indicated that, as he had held the presidency for three years, he definitely would not seek re-election, as he considered the office should go round.
The following officers were elected: President, Mr O. Cheyne; vice-presi-dents: Messrs A. Winstanley (Runanga) and J. Cassels; secretary-treasur-er, Mr H. Dodson (re-elected); executive, Messrs B. Griffiths, A. Millar, R. Gilmour and A. Dyhrberg; hon. auditor, Mr’A. M. Jamieson; trustees, Messrs Cheyne and Dodson, delegates to West Coast Association, Messrs Cassels and Dyhrberg.
NEW CLUB COMPETITION. Mr Griffiths said that the Paroa Club had always paid its subscription to the Sub-Association, but had not received any benefit from it. except the right for members to participate in the tournament. He thought that an effort should be made to give the country clubs games against teams from the town clubs. It would, he believed, result in an improvement in standard and larger entries for the tournament. J ' Mr McKay said that the whole thing boiled down to club spirit. He wished to point out that although the clubs paid subscriptions to the Sub-Associa-tion, the clubs had to stand the cosf of inter-club matches themselves. The Sub-Association could not dictate to clubs and tell them to set aside a definite day for matches, although he believed they would practically all agree to the suggestion. Mr Cheyne said that with only United and Grey in the main competition, there would be plenty of spare dates this season. ’ Mr McKay suggested that games should be arranged for the Cobden, St. Columba, Moana and Paroa Clubs. They could not do anything about the other affiliated club, Barrytowrj, in the meantime, until they knew its wishes. As last season, there would have to be a, mutual arrangement for the games with the Hokitika clubs. After further discussion, it was decided to draw up a programme of fixtures for the Greymouth, United Paroa, Moana, Cobden and St. Columba Clubs, to commence on November 12. The fixtures drawn up are as follows:— Saturday, November 12: Cobden v. i St. Columba, at St. Columba; Sunday, November 13: Moana v. United, at' Moana; Paroa v. Cobdent, at United; Sunday, February 26; Greymouth v. St. Columba, at St. Columba; Paroa v. Moana, at Paroa. The Barrytown Club was not Included in the draw, as its wishes were not known, but games wJll be arranged for that clu£> if they are desired. Other games, in addition to those drawn up, may be mutually arranged by the clubs. , In these matches, the Greymouth and United clubs are to endeavour to select teams matching thePr opponents, so that the competition cannot be classed as either A. or B. grade. The teams I will comprise twelve players, and the games are to be six up straight. The home team in each case will provide one dozen balls (not exceeding 2s 6d per pair), the cost to be divided between the town clubs. In the event of two successive wet week*
ends, the round will be eliminated, to be/played, if tinX allows,-at Iht end of the season. . - f PAROA CLUB.
