DIVORCE RUSH

Position in England EFFECT OF NEW ACT. LONDON, May 21. Poor people in London are applying for divorces at the rate of 100 a day. For the country as a whole the number of applications per day is round about 300. They are taking advantage of the new Divorce Act, which enables people of small means to seek release from matrimony at nominal cost. To do this, they have to apply to a newly-established department of the law courts entitled the Poor Persons’ Department. Extra staff has been taken on in the Divorce Registry offices to cope with the rush, and continuous overtime is being worked.

To get a divorce as a poor person, one must not be worth more than £5O or have an income of more than £2 a week.
