“Like shooting from ambush,” was a description applied to anonymous correspondence 1 in newspapers by Mr R. Aitken in proposing the toast of Parliament at the annual reunion of the Invercargill South African War Veterans’ Association. He drew a comparison between the experiences of those subjected to anonymous press criticism and the experiences of those on dawn patrol in South Africa during the Boer War, when any shrub or clump of bush might, have sheltered a sniper. Both, he said, gave you “an uneasy feeling under the tunic.’
