Racing Notes

King Mestor: King Mestor may return to the) hurdling game at the Otaki Meeting.' A coup’e of seasons ago he was a winner over sticks in the Auckland district. Melvanui: Melvanui was one of the unlucky gallopers at Te Rapa, as he was finish- (

ing on strongly both days after being badlv placed in the early part. He carries weight well and may be a prospect among the hacks, at the Auckland lixture. which opens at Ellerslie on Monday week,

Scratched; Donegal was scratched for the Great Northern Hurdles at 2.45 p.m. on Monday last, and Grey Honour was withdrawn from all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club s Winter meeting at 2.55 p.m. the same day.

La Bru: . The name La Bru has been,i claimed for the Beau Pere—Mandaiie filly, the property of Mr N. Blackmore, of Palmerston North. Friesland; According to a I-lawera report, Friesland, who recently resumed work, looks well and should hot take long to reach his best. The Buzzer: The Auckland Cup winner, The Buzzer, who has been spelling at The Grange stud, is to be brought back into work shortly to start on a New Zealand Cup preparation. Whistle Pinkie: Whistle Pinkie is now being raced in partnership by Mr R. S. Mudgway and the Awapuni trainer, J. E. Kelley. It is not unlikely that he will be tried as a jumper.

Lightly Rated: Silver Foxe’s two wins on the recent Nelson-Marlborough circuit have been lightly rated by the Foxton handicapper, who has given him only lib above the minimum in the hack sprint. ' . Maori Song:

Maori Song is at his best in soft going, and he relished the state of the track at Te Rapa. On tjie first day he finished in sixth place but wlien produced on Monday looked a wonderfully-improved horse, an impressive preliminary causing attention to be focused upon him. His apprentice rider revealed good judgment when he was overhauling Whirling by not drawing the whip as the horse won very nicely without undue punishment. Valamito:

Valamito won the President’s Handicap on Saturday week in very convincing style and amply justified the promice he showed at Avondale last month. He was always well placed and when asked for his effort in the final furlong he responded splendidly, and was definitely superior to his opposition. A rise of 71b should not jeopardise his chances in (he Cornwall Handicap, as he is in splendid fettle at present. Gold Vaals: =,

Gold Vaals was a decided favourite for the mile at Te Rapa on Monday last, and his failure to gain a place must have been disconcerting to his backers. However, he would have had to register an outstanding performance to win, as he was in the rear of the field early, and had to cover much extra ground in going round the Held. He showed up momentarily in the straight, finishing among the bunch behind the placed division. He was in the boom after his runaway win at Avondale, a and must still be regarded as a Cornwall Handicap possibility. Farland: Farland has a unique record at Te Rapa, having gained all his four successes on this course. Apart from his quartet of victories his only placed performance is a second at Takapuna. He is a five-year-old gelding by Acre and is trained at Rotorua by A. McGregor. Day Wind: A pleasing feature of Day success at Te Rapa was the fact that, he was travelling very easily at the post, and even with 61b extra in the Cornwall Handicap he may take some beating. He is not an every-day horse, although in the same form and condition he exhibited on Monday he is liable to win in any company. Bolt From Blue: The two brilliant successes of Hunting Blood in the hack sprints at the Waikato Meeting, when he scored by the remarkable distances of twelve lengths on the lirst day and by eight lengths easing up on the second day, marks this gelding as something right, out of the ordinary. It was stated in a report of the race that Hunting Blood is a three-quarter brother to Sporting Blood. However, though he is so related in blood, he does not bear this actual relationship to the Derby winner. He is a dark bay gelding by Hunting Song out of, Multi, who was of the Mtiltifid mare Gazi, who was dam of Sporting Blood. Neither Gazi nor Multi ever raced; and Multitone, who was foaled back in 1910, won only one maiden event at a Gisborne meeting, in tho colours of L. A. Mclntosh.
