CAMBRIDGE TROTS

Lucky Love Likely The win and place rotahsator will operate at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting at the Claudelandsl track. Lucky Love is in great heart) !at present, and the son of Nelson | Tasker shruld be a firm fancy in the Cambridge Handicap. The best effort ever to have been put up in this event stands to the credit of Gold Treasure, 4.32 4-5, in 1931. Levity and Our Summer may be a pair to offer stern opposition. The fields and prospects are:— 11.30: INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, 3.5 class, li miles.—Agnes Bingen, Bonny Pointer, Bronze King, Excell, Jewel Crest, Lyn Ray, Loyal Betty, Militia, Neon Oro, Northern Smile, Ratepayer, Scottish Bard, Sports Queen, Stargum. Peter Smith Jewel Crest Stargum ———————— Racing Notes Rowana: Although she sometimes races below anticipation, Rowana, on her best efforts should go near opening her account in the novice event at Foxton to-day. At Easter she was beaten only by half a length by Lady Montana at Wairarapa. Colonel Payne: Miss Dorothy Paget’s 15,000 guineas colt by Fairway from Golden Hair has been named Colonel Payne, after Miss Paget’s great-uncle. Most members of

the Whitnev family include Payne in their Christian names.

Croyden: Croyden, who is due to make his first appearance this winter in the Whirokino Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Foxton to-day, was a winner first out at Marton two years ago, and last year he scored at Wanganui in his second outing for the term and later run into the money in both the -Egmont-Wanganui ’artel The Taranaki Hunt Cups. Flying Acre: Flying Acre ran well enough in his first outing at Wanganui, when he finished third in a novice event, to make him one of the likeliest opponents for the better-known form in a similar class of event- at Foxton. Galteemore: Galteemore claims an engagement in both the Foxton Cup and the hack distance event to-day, and, as in the latter he is required t'"> Puroto on onlv 61b better terms for such an easy three lengths’ beating, he may ho found taking his chance in the Cup field. All Irish: All Irish would not lose any friends hy his fourth on Saturday. It was his first outing over country since la: t winter, and he revealed a great deal of pace. It was not surprising that he weakened in the final stages, bvt he should bo a much better horse as the result of the race. Bryce Street is an outside prospect at Ellerslie. for he came from a long way back to get second at Te Rapa, his effort being that of a stayer.

Enhanced Prospects: Horses in the big cross-country race at headquarters next month who enhanced their prospects by last weekend’s showings were Huskie. Windsor Lad, All Irish and Bryce Street.. Foxton Riders:

The following riding engagements have been announced for Foxton: — G. R. Tattersail, Old Surrey, Selkirk. Puroto; J. Chaplin, Dainty Sue, Liane, Merryman; V. Dyke, Sporting Luck: J. Forsvth, Tail Light; R. Marsh. Noisy Night; C. Carroll, Spender; R. Beal?, Entheos; B. H. Moiris, Erebus; P. Jarvis, Burghley; A. McDonald, Power Chief, Conveyer.

To Huia: Silk Sox’s younger full-brother Te Huia did not last long when he made his hurdling rebut at Wanganui recently, as he tore away at the first fence and failed to negotiate it. However, there was some support for him, ar.d so his next appearance nt Foxton on Saturday may be worth noting. Dannevirke: The two-year-old Dannevirke, who won the Monrose Handicap, 6 furlongs. at the recent Ascot Meeting in Victoria, is a New Zealand-bred colt by Colossus from the Nigger Minstrel —Dainty Step mare Tripping. Dannevirke was purchased at the 1937 Trentham Sales, by Mr F. Kitson, Melbourne, for 350 guineas.

Tripping Way to Fame: Atsaire, winner of the hack sprint each day at Washdyke last week, is evidently one of those improving performers on the way to top class that from time to time appear in the far southern racing firmament. He is evidently good, as prior to last weekhe had raced only six times and had been a winner and twice second in his previous three starts. He has always been speedv and has become solid with it. Astaire, who is now four years old, is a brown gelding by V; Ikrian (who was sent down Otago way some years back) out of the Markhope—Princess Mosca mare Dancing Days, a Juliet descendant and the dam previously of Last Dance. He is being raced by Mr R. T. Wilson afld he is trained at Riverton by A. S. McKay.,

Conveyor: Though Conveyor was secured orig- i inally with the object of a jumping career, his debut at the game has been deferred from time Io time because of his promising form on 'the

flat. He is due to step out in his new role at Foxton to-day, and, as winner of the main handicap at Manawatu last week-end, he is quite well treated with 9.8. Position Clarified: With the very satisfactory disposal of the Waikato meeting, the position in connection with the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase has been clarified to a considerable degree.- The Hurdles-issue-in particular looks less formidable than it was. Form Outstanding: Jolly Beggar was outstanding by his win under 12.0 on Monday. He had tiie two-mile Hamilton Hurdles won at any part. When he came back he blew freely, which was an indication that he would be all the better for the run. With exactly an-| other fortnight to go, the South Islander should be at his peak for the Great Northern Hurdles. Jolly Beggar failed in this event last June with 11.13, so with a drop of a couple of pounds he may not be equal to doing better than his third of twelve months ago. However, should the going be good at Ellerslie as it was at To Rapa on Monday, when it was ideal for jumping, a bit soft on top, then he can be expected to give a good account of himself. With the usual heavy ground and the formidable hurdles, he would need to be a better horse than he was last winter. Silk Sox: Silk Sox spoiled his fine effort on Saturday by falling on Monday. Donegal may now be an absentee from Ellerslie, even though he gave a glimpse of better form on Monday when he was not too lucky in the final half-mile.

Dissapointed-: • Celtic Lad disappointed in his only outing and although Iddo shaped faiily well both days, the distance seemed to bother him. He can scarcely be expected to make slufficient improvement to win over two and a-half miles at Ellerslie. No Form: . J Little can be said of the form of, the other hurdlers seen out at Te ( Aapa, although Kilberis went a good, race on the second day. As 'Jolly; Beggar was the outstanding hurdler, at the meeting, it is possible that the danger to him will come from some-; thing that did not oppose him last week-end, and in this connection Huskie appeals. A Convincing Win: . By his convincing win over country on Saturday, Huskie must now lake! pride of place in the Great Northern, Steeplechase. He not only jumps well, but he can stay for ever, It, should not be overlooked that in his latest success he covered a great deal of extra ground. He beat all but Sandy Dix in the last Great Northern Hurdles, so apart from his rarej chance in the big Steeplechase next month he must be accorded a firstrate chance of capturing .the double. Windsor Lad: Windsor Lad entered into calculations by virtue of his success on Monday. He fenced badly in the early part, but revealed a great deal of pace, and his jumping improved towards the end. Huskie and Windsor Lad were] easily the best of the ’chasers seen' out at Te Rapa, Clarion Call did not impress, and it is possible that after| his fall he mav not go on to Ellersl : e.| Riotous finished on splendid’.? on Saturday to get third, and on Monday he was in front when he foil; but his two efforts fell short of the requisite Great Northern standard .
