CYCLING
NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Greymouth Cycling Club are to be congratulated on the efficient manner in which they conducted their first big annual road race last Saturday from Greymouth to Hokitika a of twenty-five miles, and most of the credit must be given to V. Messenger and S. McAra the secretary and president of the club respectively. Caused Surprise: Cooper and Biddington caused a surprise by the way they rode to secure first and second place respectively. It is quite evident that they are distance riders above the average as they were riding just as well at the finish as early in the race. As they are both only 15 years old there is a bright prospect of them developing into first class road riders. Off Scratch: D. Moreland and P. Duffy the scratch men rode together over the whole distance, and it was only the sprinting powers of Duffy that allowed him to beat Moreland by a wheel. Good Performance: A. Bennett rode a wonderful race to secure fastest time under eighteen and had he been fit he would have been a likely winner. Disappointed: J. Taylor, after his performance in the Karoro Club’s race disappointed his supporters. He pulled out before reaching Kumara. Protest .Made: It is understood that the last has not yet been heard of R. Mclntyre’s protest against the placed men being motor-paced, as it is reported that the protest is to go to the New Zealand Cycling Federation for further consideration. Uunlucky: G. Savage, one of Canterbury’s leading riders, was unable to compete owing to the failure of hip. cycle to put in an appearance. This was. unfortunate as Savage looked like being in the run for fastest time.
