NUFFIELD MYSTERY

A MAN CHARGED. I Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] LONDON, May 25. Following the entry of two men to Lord Nuffield’s office, when two men were taken to a police station, a man named John Bruce Thornton was charged before a special Court at the police station, with being in possession of-firearms with intent to endanger life. He was remanded till tomorrow. The police refused to divulge anything beyond his name. Because of Lord Nuffield’s silence it is difficult to ascertain exactly what happened when the two men entered his office.

It is believed the police stopped a car in the main stioet of Oxford and arrested Thornton, who was the only occupant. It is stated that he had not entered the works and had not even seen Lord Nuffield. It is also learned that Lord Nuffield recently received a number of threatening letters. A previous cable said: While Lord Nuffield was working late at his private office in Oxford, a saloon-car drove up and two men entered the office. They are reported to have ordered Lord Nuffield to enter the car. Mr Kennerley Rumford, the vocalist, a friend of Lord Nuffield, who was in an adjoining room, hearing the voices, telephoned the police. The police surrounded the building and the two m«n were later taken (he police station.
