DEVONPORT NAVAL BASE

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 26.

Resounding to martial music, Devonport naval base was a colourful scene on the occasion of the investiture by Lord Galway, of Commander T B Tinley ) naval officer in charge of the base), and Mr G.' McCloghrie (manager of the base), with the Order of the British Empire. Lord Galway in the uniform of a colonel of the Household Brigade, inspected the guard, and was accompanied by Admiral Drummond and other officers. Later, his Excellency lunched informally aboard the Achilles with Admiral Drummond. The Achiles and Philomel were dressed with flags in honour of Queen Mary’s birthday. At noon a royal salute of St guns was fired from the Achilles. ELECTION PETITION, WELLINGTON, May 26. A petition, claiming that the Returning Officer allowed declaration votes he should not have allowed and that Mr H. R. Morgan was wrongly excluded ‘from the list of successful candidates, has been -lodged in the Magistrate’s Court, asking for a Magisterial inquiry into the election of the Johnsonville Town Board. Mr Morgan was at the head of the list of unsuccessful candidates, one vote behind Mr H. E. R. Green. Other candidates may also be affected. ROYAL SOCIETY. WELLINGTON, May 26. The annual meeting of the Council of the Royal Society is being held today. In his presidential address, Professor W. F. Evans spoke of the work being done in research and the publisation of results. During the last twelve months, Government grants amounted to £18,850, and nearly £17,000 had been spent on publica-, lions. He raised the question whether the time had not come for the society to confine itself to science, leaving literary and artistic publications to a more natural resting place. A posthumous award of the Hector Medal was made to the late Bishop Herbert W. Williams. The Hutton Medal was awarded to Dr. David Miller, of Cawthron Institute. Dr. Carl Skottessberg, of Sweden, was elected an honorary member. He will be visiting New Zealand later this year. Dr. F. J. Turner (Otago), and Mr W. Donovan (Dominion Analyst) were elected Fellows SERIOUS FIRE PREVENTED. 1 AUCKLAND, May 25. An efficiently-working automatic five alarm prevented a serious lire at the Government Buildings in Customs Street early this morning. The outbreak occurred in a lift, stationed on the third floor. The passenger compartment was destroyed, but the City Brigade made a good save. The superintendent reported at a Fire Board meeting later that the fire had started in a waste-paper basket in the lift. Y.W.C.A. CONVENTION DUNEDIN, May 25. Seventy-five delegates to the triennial convention of the Young Women’s Christian Association assembled this evening at the opening session of the conference, which will extend over several days.
