POISON GAS
LESSONS FOR WOMEN. WINTER DUTY IN LONDON. Weekly attendances at a series of classes, followed by an examination in which the successful candidates received certificates has been the winter duty of a number of well-known London women, states the “Daily Telegraph.” Every Tuesday afternoon, from half-past four, Lady Augusta Inskip, Lady Somerville, wife of the AttorneyGeneral, Lady Wilkinson, Lady Dunmore, and the Hon. Mrs Harry Talbot Rice have been among students of first-aid and practical details of airraid defence precautions. Classes are held in the Knightsbridge home of Mrs Fitzmaurice, of Orkney. After each class there is an informal tea party. Poison gas masks and precautionary clothes are brought to the classes bv the doctor of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, who presides, and are tried on by the students. Pupils have also to learn to tell the different kinds of poison gas by their characteristic odour, and to rig up gas-proof shelters in their own homes.
Mrs Fitzmaurice, or Orkney, with Lady Elibank, is also organising classes in first-aid and air-raid defence in the factories on the Great West Road. One of her plans is to enlist a band of ex-debutantes to take a course of six lessons and an examination in Knightsbridge.
