ROSS NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent.] The first meeting of the newly elected Mayor (Mr K. O. May) and councillors took place in the coronation hall on Wednesday. Various councillors congratulated Mi’ May and the Mayor welcomed old and new members. Councillor Blacklow was appointed Deputy Mayor. All councillors were present with the exception of Councillor C. Upjohn who is an inmate of the hospital. It was decided to forward a message of sympathy to Cr. Upjohn and to wish him a speedy recovery. It was decided that the Council meet on the second Wednesday in the month at. 7.30 p.m. The | various committees were set up were finance, Reserves. Public Works, Hall,' Recreation, and Library. It is very annoying and loud are the complaints that the 3ZR evening sessions are interrupted by the continuous howl of a nearby Australian station. The Hokitika Wednesday night children’s session is very popular to Ross listeners, but we either have to put up with the squeal ing or close down.
As the Ross seniors are too busy to play football this year, the old married men have challenged the juniors to a match on their first free Saturday. The losing team is to entertain the winners at a smoke concert. The following team will represent mar-, ried old boys:—R. Richards, A. Robertson, E. Mitchell, R. Parker, J. Ableson, Rev. Dewer, J. Johnson, J. Muir, W. Muir, P. Woods, G. King, A. Sykes, F. Chreton, S. King, Jeffries, A. Ross, B. Leslie. Scofield. The only worry the old boys have, is where to find togs. Mr Chapman who left Ross aerodrome by plane this morning, had a safe trip home this evening, after visiting Jackson’s Bay. Miss Finnerty of Westport is visiting her sister Mrs Fairhall of Ross. The friends and workmates of Mr Bobbie Donaldson are pleased to see him home and about again after his recent illness in hospital. The usual monthly meeting of the Ross Women’s Institute was held in the Totara Hall on Wednesday. The' President Mrs Peebles presided over, a large gathering of members. The) meeting opened with the Institute) song. The President welcomed three; visitors Mrs Denson who is President of the Makakihi Institute South Canterbury, also Mrs Murray and Miss Murray of Ikamauta. Two new member Mrs Ord and Mrs Wadsworth were enrolled. Mrs Peebles thanked all members who .helped to win the South Westland Cup, especially Mrs R. Jones and Mrs Gough for their artistic taste in arranging the display. The wandering shilling was given to Miss O. Jones for June. She made 6 bags of cocoanut ice, which netted 3s. The roll call “My Favourite Song”; was well responded to. “Harbour Lights” being Ist and “Rainbow on the River” 2nd. The competition for most articles in a match oox resulted in Mrs Pierson being Ist with 152 articles, while Mrs Buchannan and Mrs Nolan tied for 2nd place with 119 articles. A dainty supper was served' by the hostesses Miss P. Clarke, Mrs| Buchannan, Mrs Flaherty, and Miss Houlerhan. Mrs Bridgman on the accordian played popular airs, and kept; community singing in full swing. Mrs| Bridgman also recited a humerous number. The National Anthem brought a happy evening to a close) The many friends of Mr C. Upjohn an inmate of the Westland hospital will be pleased to learn, he is progressing favourablv. | The Coronation Hall is looking very smart, since having a coat of paint.| The work is in the capable hands of j Mr R. J. Scott. I
Mr and Mrs F. Fellows, the guests of Mrs Ablison have been visiting Ross after an absence of nine vears. Mr
Fellows ses a big change in Ross, nearly all of the old land marks being gone, and new buildings being erected in their places.
