RIVER EROSION
WAIROA POSITION. • WAIROA, May 14. Owing to the serious erosion along the Wairoa River banks by the recent floods, the Wairoa Harbour Board decide ! at its monthly meeting on Tuesday morning to send to the Minister of Public Works a telegram asking that a fully-qualified engineer on river erosion be sent immediately to consider the position. The Harbour Board’s pilot, Captain A. Night, in presenting his report, stated that with regard to flood damages the meat wharf at the freezing works had been affected and that there was the danger of losing the outer end with another flood if it was not seen to. The town wharf had also gone down a few inches, but soundings showed that it was in no danger at present. The boat landing at North Clyde had been washed away, only the town end piles being left.
Mr Harker: The river erosion since the flood is almost tragic. An immediate inspection should be made by a competent engineer, as we do not know how soon we are going to get another flood.
Mr J A. Corkhill: The matter of river erosion has been shelved for the last 10 years. It is only a matter of time before the town bridge will be affected.
Mr Harker then moved that the telegram referred to above should be sent to the Minister of Public Works.
