CAPE ELECTIONS

TOWN RESULTS Government’s Return Assured [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] CAPE TOWN, May 18 A feature of the voting at. the general election has been the heavy consistent poll of women, who out- ■ number the men. „ The campaign was comparatively quiet, until last night, when the outside districts of the Rand were given over to hooliganism, and smashing cars belonging to Jews. The police cleared the streets of the poorer class district. I (Received May 19. 11.30 p.m.l CAPE TOWN, May 19. ) The counting of votes in the urban areas for the Union Parliament elections has been completed, the state of parties being: United 51, Nationalist nil. Dominion 6, Labour 3, Independents 1. The counting in the rural areas is now in progress. It is anticipated that when counting has concluded, the United Party, which holds the Government benches, will have more than ninety seats. In the last Parliament it held 117 seats, the others being: Republicans 20, Dominion 5, Labour 4, Independents 4. | It was anticipated that nearly a million would vote. Four of the Unit-) ed (Government) Party were returned unopposed. This left 354 candi-j dates for 146 seats. So. far 71 seats) are accounted for, leaving <9 to be decided. I The principal opposition consists of, Ihe Republican Party, self-styled the. “Purified Nationalists.” with 104 can-| didates, led by Doctor Malan. This Party aims at the establishment of an ( Independent Republic, and it has a. certain sentimental sway, but the campaign has rekindled some of the, old racial bitterness. Other Lion forces are the Dominion I’ariyi with thirty-three candidates, which) appeals exclusively to the British ele- : ment; the Labour Party with thirtysix candidates: and Independents with thirtv-live nominees.
