BLACKBALL SPORTS
PRETTY AND MASON DEADHEAT IN BIG CHOP.
Favoured with fine weather and an excellent attendance of the public, the newly formed Blackball Sports Club have reason to be well satisfied with its first sports gathering which took place on the Blackball Domain on Saturday afternoon. Keen interest centred in the bicycle race which started from Greymouth. In an exciting finish J. Archer narrowly defeated R. Mclntyre with C Furness close up in third place. Besides winning Archer also won the gold medal presented for fastest time his time being 53min 22secs. I The chopping events filled exceptionally well, axemen being present from as far south as Wataroa T. Pretty further entranced his splendid record for the season by dead-heating with J. Mason in the big chop. W. Maloney chopped brilliantly in the first heat finishing fully 10 seconds before the other placed men. A tough block prevented him taking an active part in the final.
G. P. Kennedy a consistent runner this season succeeded in annexing both the 100yds and 120yds footraces.
