COTTON FOR ROADS

LANCASHIRE DEVELOPMENT. LONDON, April 27. Faced with the disastrous slump in cotton manufacturing of recent years, Lancashire mills have been searching for new uses for the fabric. A novel development has taken place at Burnley, where cotton is being used as a road-building' material. I A concrete base is laid in the usuali way to a depth of five inches. Cotton | of coarse mesh, ■ looking rather like a fish net, is then placed on top, | separating the foundation. layer from the concrete surface, 'which is three inches thick. | The advantage of the system is that when resurfacing is necessary, | it is a much more simple matter to | remove the top layer only leaving, the bottom layer undisturbed. ’ Thej cost of the material is about two pence a yard.
