AUSTRALIAIN WOOL CHEQUE.
BUT STILL WELL ABOVE FIVEYEAR AVERAGE. The Australian wool average for the 1937-38 season is estimated at about £50,000,000, compared with about £66,000,000 last season, and £54,000,000 for 1935-36. Despite this reduction, the season’s returns are expected to be about £14,000,000 above the average for the live low years, 1929-30 to 1932-33 and 193435. ’ The sales opened well but after only two days prices fell below expectations, and they did not recover to the original levels'at any time during the season. By way of contrast, lambs brought excellent prices on local and export account, and good prime mutton was in erally at very satisfactory rates. The estimate of the season’s returns is given by, Winchcombe, Carson, Ltd., in its annual review, published recently. The ligures include sales in London, which represent about 10 per cent, of the amount realised in Australia. The following figures show the amount realised in Australian currency for the wool sold in the principal selling centres of the Commonwealth during the past 10 seasons: — , , Amount £ 1928- 56.720,515 1929- 32,806,266 1930- 28,203,633 1931- 29,363,156 1932- 34,410,327 1933.34 51.098,717 1935-36 49,100,537 1934-35 . . . 37,927,409 1036-37 ■/.... 60,175,497 ; 1937-38* 46,000,000
