May 19. The Rata' arrived from Wanganui last night, and is to sail at 1-p.m. today with coal for Picton and Wanganui. The Titoki arrived from Tarakohe early this morning, and is to sail for Nelson at 10 p.m. to-night with coal. The Kaimai, loaded with coal for Lyttelton, Timaru, Oamaru, and Dunedin, is to sail for the first-named port at noon to-day. The Totara is due to-night or early to-morrow morning from Gisborne, to load coal for New Plymouth.

The Kakapo is scheduled to sail from Napier to-day, and is expected lo arrive to load coal on Saturday for Wellington. The Kaimiro’s sailing from Auckland is definitely cancelled meantime, owing to trouble with the crew. The Hokitika was to have sailed from Wellington last night with general cargo for Westport and Coast ports. The Canopus arrived from Auckland at 1 a.m. this morning, and is loading coal for Auckland, expecting to be despatched to-morrow afternoon. The Te Aroha sailed for Little Wan-| ganui at 7 a.m.. this morning, thence tn Wellington. The a.s. Piri is due to arrive from Dunedin about Tuesday next, and after discharging explosives proceeds tn Greymouth.

Personal: Mr E. J. Gifford, of the Department of Justice, Wellington, is on an annual visit of inspection of Magistrate’s Courts on the West Coast. Miss Tessy Coyne, of Westport, is spending a holiday at. Greymouth as the guest of Miss Nancy Smith. Messrs Chris. Nicholls, of Millerton. and J. Simpson, of Seddonville, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned to Westport yesterday. Mr L. C. Smith, representing J. Myers and Co., is visiting Westport. Messrs W. K. Greer and W. Aitken, of Christchurch, are visiting Westport. Both are prominent members of the Sunnyside Rugby team. Miss M. Ninnes, of the G.P.0., Nelson, arrived on Monday to spend holidays with her parents at Millerton. Mrs Clarke Smith, who has been spending a holiday with her parents nt Millerton, loaves to-day for Wellington. Mrs J. Orman, Millerton, left today on a visit to Christchurch.

Millerton Medical Association: A special meeting of the Medical Association was held in Peggie’s Hall on Thursday 12th, Mr R. Jack presiding. . Correspondence was received from Dr. Hargreaves, informing the association that, he would endeavour to arrive on the Hill in a month's time to make arrangements.—The meeting decided that he be accepted, as he had been recommended by Dr. Hooper. The balance sheet, which was the next business, brought, forth a lot. of discussion. The meeting decided that the late and present secretaries, with Mr RFinlayson, audit the books and report to a later meeting.

Card Tournament: The Labour Party’s card tournament was well patronised on Tuesday evening. The euchre award went to Mr Ferguson, with Mrs Mallett second and Mr F. Todd third. The 4o’sl competition was won by Mrs Brewer A much appreciated supper was provided by the ladies’ committee.

Induction of Councillors: The first meeting of the newlyelected Westport Borough Council will take place on Friday evening, owing to the absence of the Mayor, Mr J. Kilkenny. The ceremony for the induction of the members will take place, and the various commit; tees will be appointed.

Hospital Board and County Council: The meeting of the Buller Hospital Board will be held next Tuesday night, the County Council meeting following on Wednesday morning. The meetings of both are taken in order that members who represent both the Hospital Board and Council, and who live at. great distances from Westport, will make one trip suffice for both meetings.

White. Star Seniors: White Star Football Club applied to Marlborough Rugby Union to provide the curtain-raiser to the BullerMarlborough match on June 11, and received advice yesterday granting the application. Stars will field a senior team, and expect to have a to apply to the Buller Rugby Union for a subsidy on benefits in a proposed insurance scheme was made by the White Star Football Club’s committee on Monday evening. Details of the scheme will be placed before the players. . Mr W. Elliott was nominated ioi the vacancy on the management committee on the Buller Rugby Union caused by Mr G. Orman’s retirement, and Mr W.i Jenkins was nominated as junior selector.. A protest was raised, and will be forwarded to the Buller Rugby Union, about the granting of byes to Westport Technical and Granity High School teams in the term holidays. It was considered that these teams were clubs, and should not have repeated byes at the expense of other clubs.

Football Insurance Scheme: At a meeting oj the Westport. Football Club last evening, it was decided after a general discussion to commence their insurance of players on Saturday, this to cover both senior and junior grades. 1 - The scheme provides that ine m-

jured players shall be paid £2 for five weeks, the injured players to pay for the first visit to the doctor, and the club for further visits. Players are required to pay 6d per playing Saturday, such payments to be made before the game begins, otherwise there is no cover. Messrs W. Atkin, M. Head. R. Butterfield, J. Easton. H. Menzies and J. Bonisch were appointed a committee to deal with all insurance cases.

Mr J. Easton was nominated for the vacant seat on the Management Committee of the Rugby Union caused by the resignation of Mr G. Orman. and Mr Jock Luff for junior selector.

Rival Rugby League Club: The weekly meeting of the Rival Rugby League Club was held in the club rooms, Russell Street, last evening, Mr H. McKeown presiding. There was a good attendance of players and supporters. The first competition fixture, Rivals v.) Rangers at Waimangaroa, on Sunday, at 2.45 p.m. sharp, was arranged. The Rival players for Waimangaroa are as follows: L. Clarkin, R. Lvnburn, C. Walsh, A. Fox, E. Fox, L. Woodcock, J. Daily, L. Hawes, A. Caldwell. L. McGeady, S. Daily, W. Brown, A. Burt. W. Ledgard, J. Day, R.' Ryan, McGregor and A. Pearson. Mr McCormack was appointed team manager. A bus leaves the Post Office at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday.

Westport Jockey Club: Westport Jockey Club, through the courtesy of the Canterbury Jockey Club, has decided to hold its one-day meeting at Riccarton on Saturday, July 9. and has drawn up the following programme, providing stakes totalling £9OO, which is £2OO more than the amount usually allotted for one day when the races have been held in Westport:— Maiden Stakes, of £lOO. 5 furlongs. Buller Trot, of £l2O, 3.43 class, 11 miles. Scanlon Hack Handicap, of £l2O, 1 mile. . Westport Handicap, of £2OO, including silver cup donated by Mr H. and Miss E. Morgan, valued at £3O; 11

miles. Granity Handicap Trot, of £l2O, 6 furlongs. Morley Handicap, of £l5O, 7 fur-

longs. The programme provides for seven races, but it is just possible that an eighth race may be included before the programme is finalised. Mr Bell, secretary of Canterbury Jockey Club, is giving the Westport Jockey Club every assistance. It is generally expected that with the Lewis Pass Road, and also a good railway service available, residents of the Buller will be well represented at the meeting.
