Morgan, and in the chair, the Rev. G. H. Schurr, F. M. O’Gorman. The Mayor extended a welcome to the Rev. Schurr, who succeeds Canon J. W. Bloyce on the committee. The meeting concluded with impromptu speeches, which , brought forth some animated discussions and happy laughter. Nelson Education Board:

The following additional business was dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board. Accounts totalling £9.023 were passed for payment. The Department authorised the acquisition of new school sites at Alexander River and the Board instructed the School Committee to make application to the Warden for the ground required. The Department notified the Board of approval of grant for a new four-room-ed school at Denniston. The Chairman stated an additional room was now required and the secretary was instructed to apply for extra money before another room. The Education Department notified a grant for a

new school at Granity, which now includes a dental clinic. On the mo tion of Mr. Harkness, the Board decided to call tenders, which will close before next Board’ meeting. Mr. Harkness also drew the Board’s at-, tention to a misleading article in a Westport newspaper on the question of new school sites at Westport which, inter alia, accused the Board of dilly dallying with the matter. He I stated that the criticism was most 1 unfair as the delay was not on the I part of the Board, which had done everything possible to expedite the matter. The Department was to [blame for any delay. The Chairman agreed with Mr. Harkness and stated that the article was not only most unfair, but quite contrary to facts which no attempt had been made to obtain from local Board members. Some loose talk on the same lines had also been made at the Westport Householders’ meeting, accusing the Board of delaying the erection of new schools. The position was that tne Minister was holding up the purchase of new sites as he was not yet satisfied two schools were required at Westport. As about £25,000 expenditure was involved in acquiring and preparing new sites and erection Oi two new schools at Westport, the matter naturally receiving very careful consideration by the Department. Mr. Barltrop also took strong exception to certain statements in leaders. On the motion of Mr. Harkness, the Board asked the Chairman to interview the Minister of Education on the question of one or two new schools at Westport, and the Secretary was] instructed to reply, stating the true position in the paper concerned. Mr. J. P. Robinson, asking permission to camp in Longford School grounds during the winter months, but the Board regretted such permission could not be granted. The Seddonville Commit'tee, asking that provision tor a dental clinic be made in the proposed new school, buildings. The Chairman doubted if this would be approved as it necessitated the election of an additional room. At Granity, a dental clinic only meant converting portion of the school building to a dental clinic. The Secretary was instructed to write the committee for further particulars. The head teacher at Burnett’s Face asked that a concrete path be made to ms residence. The teacher is to be asked to get quotes for this work. Kongahu Committee wrote stating the estimated cost of erecting temps courts on the school ground was £6O. Die committee had £3O in hand and an- , other grant, from the Board ot £lO was granted on the usual terms. the Murchison Committee was granted £4O towards provision of a water sup ■ ph for school baths.
