One result of the recent heavy rains in the Urewera and Hawke’s Bay districts is the unusually high level of Lake Waikaremoana, which has risen over 6ft. in the past two weeks. This is the highest the lake has been since it rose 15ft. some 25 years ago. Lake Waikaremoana is 2000 ft. above sea level and, as it is 21 square miles in area, some indication can be gained of the tremendous rainfall necessary to raise the level to such an extent. Only the density of the bush surrounding it has prevented more serious slips on the steep bluffs that overhang the lake.
