Nightcalm Golden Chest Gay Honour Racing Notes Ran Fine Race: Palustre ran a fine race at Pukekohe, considering that she has not previously acted well in bad ground. This effort showed that the Tea Tray filly is again back to her best, and it should not be long before she returns to the winning list if she strikes firm track conditions. She is engaged at the Waikato meeting this week High Sea: High Sea. who ricked himself on the eve of last Easter meeting, has recovered and is again among the regular workers. High Sea is still a maiden, but has some fine performances to his credit in good class hack races, and when he again contests events exceeding sprint distances the Heroic gelding should soon reach the winning list. Grateful: Grateful ran his worst race to date this season at the Pukekohe meeting, and whether this may be attributed to the state of the going or the fact that he has felt the season’s racing and 1 travelling remains to be seen. It would be unwise to condemn him on one failure, as he is a gelding who thrives on a light preparation and, consequently an opinion that he has trained off may be a little premature Mai Acre: No fault can be found with Mia Acre’s condition and the Acre gelding will be- in excellent order for the Waikato meeting next week. His success at the Ellerslie Easter meet-j ing puts him out of the hack class' hurdle events, but this should not be a bar to further success over the hat-| tens, and he appeals as a likely’i lightweight in his forthcoming engagement. Vaalstar: Mr J. Whitten’s Vaalstar is on the. easy list just now on account of re-1 ceiving an injury- while careering round his paddock. However, the trouble is not serious. Mazir: Mr J. H. Wallace’s Mazir is respond-' ing well to the treatmeriUhe has been given during the past month. In condition he is decidedly robust, and he will be allotted steady pacing for the next two months, preparatory to undergoing a preparation for spring racing. The Whirlwind gelding has never been in better heart than at present, and should certainly be a payable proposition in the new racing season. Golden Sheila: Golden Sheila is in light work on her owner's Waihou track. She is to fulfill her engagements at Tc Rapa this week, providing the course is in reasonably good order. Her owner, Mr P. A. Sweeney, is now handling a rising two-year-old filly by Foxbridge from Volimond, who in duC| course should carry racing colours successfully. Amiss: Hunting Bag was lame after his race at Ashburton, and was returned to Greymouth. Lustra): Lustral is looking bright and well now, and may yet live up to what| was expected of him earlier in his career, though, of course, he will require to improve on his Blenheim form to achieve that. Bonnie Agnes: Bonnie Ague?:, who i.ui away with a race on the first day tit Nelson, is not robust and did not hold her form.

By Nightmarch from Rua Agnes, she is a half-sister, three years old, to Sweet Agnes. When freshened up she should win again. Jewish Lad: There is not a great deal of Jewish Lad, but he is more solid now than ever before. A. Goodman has worked an appreciable improvement in him. and probably will produce him as a jumper shortly. Consistent: One of the best performers on the Nelson-Marlborough circuit was Roy Bun, who won at each place and was only narrowly beaten in his second start at Blenheim. He was produced jn fine condition and stood up to hard racing splendidly. Arctic Star:

Arctic Star, who developed lameness during the running of the Wanganui Steeplechase on Saturday, and was considered unlucky not to have been closer than third, returned to Riccarton on Tuesday. The trouble is not deemed to be of a serious nature, but it was not thought wise to take him to Ellerslie.

Trotting Notes

A Prospect: Oasis was close up all the way in the Southland Handicap on Saturday at Forbury Park, and the half-brother to Rocks Ahead looks like being returned a winner shortly. The former Southland gelding has been trained by D. Teahen for some months. Unreliable:

Ivy Peterson is costing her supporters a lot of money by her tactics at the barrier. She went away once correctly at Forbury Park, but retired well beaten -with half a mile to go in the Royal Handicap. Consistent:

Iraq has been second now in his last three starts, and the Wrack gelding deserves to win any time now He skipped and ran out at the top of the straight in the Farewell Handicap at Forbury on Saturday. Otherwise he might have troubled Frisco LadyGreat Way and Vesuvius:

At the meeting at Perth on‘Saturday, May 7, the Trotters’ Handicap was won by Great Way, who started from 288 yards behind scratch. Another winner was Vesuvius, one of the best-known racehorses in Canterbury a few years ago. Great Way’s race was run over two miles, and the handicap was based on a mile rate ofi 2min 35sec. The start of 288 yards representing 24 seconds, is something that no horse in New Zealand would be asked to give away to-day, but was quite an ordinary handicap some 30 years ago. Vesuvius in his race conceded 36 yards over a mile and three-quarters, when the class stipulated a mile rate of 2min 16sec oi better. Embark: The Southland pacer, Embark paced a fine mile on (.he first day a! Forbury Park in 2min 8 4-ssec, and was just beaten. On this performance he looked a good prospect for tho Pacific Handicap; but he failed to ,gd away. Later in the day, however, hn went a solid race in the Royal Han dicap to collect third place and register 4min 22 l-ssec. This performance showed the Happy Voyage pacer to be greatly improved. On looks he Is very ordinary, but he has speed. Early in his career he was a bit unruly, and a term in the shafts of a cart cooled him down. Directly: The Wyndham-trained Directly drew attention by his fine finishing run on Saturday in the Railway' Handicap at Forbury Park, and E. Todd 1 ' four-year-old by Wellington Directplay Soon should reach the winning list when he behaves a bit better at the barrier.
