FARM POLICY

N.Z. AND AUSTRALIA

Co-operation Projected

lAust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.l • Received May 12, 11.25 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 12.

The New Zealand representatives to the Australian Agricultural Council, Hon. Mr Lee -Martin and Mr Cockayne were warmly welcomed to the Council to-day by the Chairman, the Acting-Minister of Commerce (Hon. Mr Cameron), who said: "In inviting the New Zealand Government to send to this meeting its Minister .who is responsible for dealing with agricultural administration and agricultural questions, the Commonwealth Government did so because it realised that, in its approach to many agricultural problems, it had . muc i i;t common with its sister Dominion. Mr Cameron stressed the value of the exchange of information and ideas. He concluded: “It is very appropriate, for this reason, tint a New Zealand Minister should be present at our Council, and we are exceedingly glad to see him, and to do b m welcome.”

Hon. Mr Lee Martin assured the Agricultural Conference that New Zealand would give the Australian authorities the fullest co-operation regarding the importation of stud sheep from the Dominion. Further inquiries, however, would have to be made, particularly concerning the. position of certain societies. The exchange of officers, as between New Zealand and Australia, so as to ensure that their mutual problems would be treated on a common basis, was advocated by Hon. Mr Lee Martin in his reply to the address of welcome. He assured the meeting that New Zealand would be glad to compare notes with the Commonwealth on matters affecting the two Dominions.

The Conference adopted a recommendation that the New Zealand Department of Agriculture should be asked to arrange for the elimination of inferior animals from its exports of stud sheep to Australia, ensuring a supply of animals true to type. This matter will be further reviewed when the New Zealand authorities have completed their inquiries. Mr Lee Martin and his colleagues were entertained at luncheon by Rt. Hon. J. A. Lyons, Prime Minister.
