REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] REEFTON, April 29. Mr L. J. Schmitt, General Manager of the Government Tourist Department, was a visitor to Reefton yesterday, accompanied by his two sons. Mr Schmitt was formerly in the Consolidated G.M. Company’s office, at Reefton.

News was received to-aay of the death at Auckland yesterday of Mrs Stephen McDonald. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr William Campbell, and had been a resident of Papakura for some years past. At the Hospital Board meeting, Miss Perotti wrote, asking if the Board would consider purchasing property in Broadway.—lt was resolved to make appl'eant ”n offer of £2.71 for sections Isnnol Mc.<»vi?ie wro’o. resigning position as probationer nurse. Matron Kane reported'Miss 1. McKenzie had resigned, and Nurse Hepburn had taken over temporary duty as night nurse. The Medical Superintendent reported: Admissions 26, discharged 3, deaths 2, in-patients 36, births 10, X-rays 10, out-patients 12, attendances 27. The Health Department advised that of the applicants for the Board Secretaryship, Mr J. Banks had the best qualifications. Messrs G. B. Mclnrot and F. W. Archer moved that Mr A. E. Willis be appointed, while Messrs Seawright and Watson proposed Mr Banks. The motion was carried to appoint Mr Willis. At the County Council meeting, the District Engineer wrote re. widening portion of Blackwater-Waiuta road, and from Gallacher and Smith, tender for same work.—Cr. Mclnroe moved and Cr. Clayton seconded, that the tender be accepted.—Carried. Alexander Mines Ltd., wrote re. Stevenson’s Flat Track. —Referred to the Engineer, with power to act. Pyramid Coal Syndicate wrote classification of Boatman’s short track.—The Transport Department is to be asked to re-classify the road. Several ratepayers wrote requesting improvements to the river bank to prevent flooding.—Cr. Clarke moved and Cr. Watson seconded, that the Engineer prepare proposals for protection. Waitahu Gold Mining Co. Ltd.,' wrote asking for bridge across Boatman’s Creek on Victoria Range Track, also for attention to Gilmer Road.—Granted. Miss S. T. "Morris wrote asking for bridge across Maruia River at Springs. Mr S. Fry wrote regarding road to Murray Creek mine.—Left to the Engineer. It was decided on the motion of Qrs. Clayton and Clarke to point out to the Tourist Department the difference between present and past conditions at Maruia Springs. The Chairman gave a review of the past three years, stating the Council had something to show for expenditure. Cr. Clayton said £4OO a year was saved. Improvements had been made without loans. In 1935, the bank overdraft was £593, and it was £2,376 in 1938. Plant valued at £2,757 had been added to the Council’s equipment

A delightful coming-of-age party was given on Wednesday evening at the Band Room, Reefton, by Mr. and Mrs. L. Reid, in honour of their eldest daughter, Isabel. There were numerous friends present from Greymouth, Blackwater, Ikamatua and Reefton. Community singing and dancing were enjoyed by everyone Items were given during the evening by Miss Edna Woods (tap dance g Messrs Jim Laughton and F. Lindbonij (songs), B. Jacques and R. Simpson (instrumental duet). The guest of the evening received a number of presents and congratulatory telegrams. 'An, excellent supper was served. Mr. Jim Haines proposed the toast of “The Ring” and also “The Guest of the evening, Miss Isabel Reid,” which was re-

sponded to, all present standing. Then a gold key was presented to| Miss Reid by her father, while those present sang “I've Got the Key of the Door—-Never been 21 Before.” Mr. Pat Scrimgour replied on behalf of the guest of the evening, after which all joined in singing “For She’s A Jolly Good Fellow.” After supper dancing and singing were continued until the party broke up, Mrs. Archer presiding at the piano, and extras being played by Mrs. Finlay and Mr. Scrimgour. The guests included: Mesdames A. Archer, B. Winchester, B. Finlay, August and F. Fellows, Misses Eileen Coghlan, Edna Fensom, Edna Woods, Nell Coghlan, Bessie Renwick, Alma Coghlan, Nita Fensom, Beatrice Reid; Messrs Jim Haines. Pat Scrimgour, Fred Lindbom, John Jacobs, Don Stuart, Bob Simpson, Frank Fellows, Jack Lawry, Tom Finlay, Jim Patterson, Pud Earl, Leo Bourke, Jim Laughton and Bill Jacques. At the monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council. Crs. F. W. Archer (chairman). F. Seawright, G. B. Mclnroe, T. Watson, W. Clayton, and W. S. Clarke attended. F. A. Collis wrote regarding water charge on shop and dwelling and on outside tap.—Charge amended as requested. The Blackwater Mines, Ltd., wrote asking for consent to construct) and use an electrical generating plant at Waiuta.—Consent given. The) Secretary of the Centennial Organisation wrote regarding contribution and matters in connection with the 1 West Coast Court.—Council’s allocation to be paid. The Mining Valuer Wrote giving final figures for valuation of mining property as under:— Rcefton Riding: Capital value, £16,035; value of improvements, £12,600; unimproved, £3,435. Boatman’s Riding: £34,755 —£30,225 - £4,530. Antonio’s Riding £438,746 — £268.845—£169,901. Crushington Hiding £16,755—£14,760—£1,995. Maruia Springs Riding £1,020—£570—£450. T. Learmont forwarded for the Council’s approval and consent part Section 17J, Block XI, Mawheraiti S.D— Approved. The marriage was solemnised yesterday afternoon at St. Stephen’s Church, Reefton, by Rev. C. Tanner, of Constance McKinley, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Pankhurst of Reefton, and William Jaketh, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Prentice, of Auckland. The organist was Miss Doreen Walsleben (school chum of the bride) of Stoke. The bride, who entered the Church (which was decorated by friends), escorted by her father, chose a gown of parchmentsatin, slim fitting with high waistline, leg of mutton sleeves, and unusual twin points at the neck, finished with a spray of orange blossoms, and a flowing circular scalloped train A veil of parchment cut silk tulle and Breton lace was held in place by a gold halo of orange blossoms, and e sheath of Madonna lilies completed the toilette. The bride was attended by her sister, Mrs. W. Hunt, as matron of honour, and Miss June Pankhurst as bridesmaid. Their gowns were lavender faconne cloque, princess style, finished at the neck and waistline with sprays of pink flowers. They wore coronets of lavender and pink flowers, and carried shower bouquets to tone. The bride’s nieces, Pauline Pankhurst and Klenda Hocking, wore pink georgette redingotes, with rosebud circlets <*i the head, and carried baskets of flowers. Stan Allen, of Blenheim, was best man, and Mr John Dellaca, of Reefton, was groomsman.
