CATALONIA FRONT
REBELS CHECKED Portugal Recognises Their Government [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] i LONDON, April 27. The “Telegraph’s” Barcelona correspondent says: Rebel machine-gun-ners, withholding fire till the last moment, scattered a loyalist cavalry attack between Teruel and Morelia. The correspondent corroborates that the loyalists are withstanding the rebels on the Levante front. The correspondent says: The rebel offensive against Teruel is due to General Franco’s realisation that the attempt to conquer Catalonia has failed, necessitating the prolongation of the warfare. He has therefore abandoned Barcelona as the objective, and is concentrating on a drive on Valencia, via Castello de Lapana. The Spanish Press Agency announces from Barcelona, that loyalist divisions not onlj r stemmed the rebel offensive, but took the initiative in the Erbo-Segre-Pyrenees sectors, inflicting heavy losses on Italians, when the latter attempted a counter-attack.] Moreover the loyalist front remains intact between Teruel and Montal- ( ban. while the loss of Aliaga is defied. After thorough and sec-1 ret preparations the Castillians broke the Government lines in three places and advanced a depth of 13 miles. Government reserves, were rushed up. but failed to stem the advance. Arada’s troops, aided by a rebel naval squadron, captured Latoretta
