REEFTON J.C.

AUTUMN MEETING OPENS Memorial to Mungatoon SILVER RING RETURNS TO FORM. Drizzling rain was encountered for the opening day of the Reefton Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at the Reefton racecourse yesterday, at which there was only a fair attendance. The track was in good order, but was on the soft side. The totalisator handled £3,119, as against £4,581, when a oneday meeting was held on a Saturday, a decrease of £1,462. With the exception of the principal event, there were two dividend fields, and the racing was most interesting with several close finishes. The meeting was late in starting owing to the late arrival of the train, and the consequent late arrival of several of the starters for the opening event, but the unspirited betting permitted the meeting to be concluded practically on time. It was then almost dusk, and with a heavy misty rain falling, it was difficult to pick up the runners in the concluding event. The meeting was excellently conducted by officials of the Club, headed by the President, Mr J. B. Auld, and the Secretary, Mr W. Gore-Porter. The track and appointments were a credit to the caretaker, Mr J. H. Wicken. Four favourites won during .the day, namely Rabble, Mungatoon, The Masquerader and Silver Ring. Other favourites to win were second, third, fourth and sixth choices. All of the favourites paid under even money, but the other dividends were worth while, whilst Copyist paid more for second place than did the winner, in the opening event. A. E. Ellis had two mounts, The Masquerader and Silver Ring, for two wins, whilst his brother, L. J. Ellis also rode two winners out of six rides, Silver Lark and Mungatoon, thus adding to his lead in the jockey’s premiership. G. Watson and A. Messervy were the other successful horsemen on Rabble, and Bonnie Agnes respectively. Mungatoon won the principal event handily from the pacemaker, Windward, In a great finish, with Roy Bun also close up third. Monipere did not race as solidly as earlier on the circuit, and faded right out of the picture in the run to the post. Silver Lark flashed up from the distance to beat the outsider of the field, Copyist, in the open sprint, with the favourite, Acceptable, beaten off into third place. Rabble scored a hollow victory in the Alexander Hack Handicap, leading practically throughout, to win in a canter, indicating tnat he was of a class above the opposition. Four Square won the Progress Trot reservedly from Kay Francis and Atarau Queen. The surprise of the day’s racing was the win of Bonnie Agnes in the Stewards’ Handicap, when she led practically throughout, to lower the colours of the favourite, who was most unlucky )n the running and put up a great performance to get within a length of the winner. Bonnie Agnes paid a dividend extending into double figures. Big Melson made it four on end when he won the Reefton Trot convincingly from Jumbo. The Masquerader took the honours in the Highweight Handicap, beating Potent in a good finish. A feature of the meeting was the re-turn-to winning form of the former champion of the Australian and New Zealand turf, Silver Ring, who won the Au Revoir Handicap in a canter from the consistent Windward, who was also runner-up in the principal event.

West Coast-owned and trained horses had a most successful day, being represented by four winners, namely, Silver Lark (Reefton), Bonnie Agnes (Westport) and Silver Ring and Big Nelson (Greymouth), the remaining four races going to Canter-bury-trained candidates, Rabble, Mungatoon, The Masquerader and Four Square. Scott Case OWNER’S EXPLANATION. WELLINGTON, April 28. The following announcement has been made to the press by Mr J. R. McKenzie, owner of U. Scott: Owing to the erratic running of my horse, U. Scott, I feel that I owe an explanation to the public who were so unfortunate in backing him in the one and a-half miles race on the second day. My sympathies are with them, as if I were in their place, I probably would have felt similar to them. U. Scott was left at the barrier at the start of the first day’s race, and, when he struck his hobbles, was about 72 yards behind the field, a hopeless position from which to win the race. Yet his driver sent him after the field, and he showed a wonderful burst of speed to catch the field, though he was then unable to finish on in the straight. Naturally, the public, after this performance, selected him to win at his second start. Owing to an injury, we were unable to work U. Scott for four months. As he was unable to receive the necessary work in a short time, U. Scott, who is a stallion, was very fresh and above himself. On the second day, Free Holmes, my driver, tucked U. Scott in behind another horse. U. Scott pulled so hard that it was necessary for Holmes to lay i

back to hold him, and he had difficulty in keeping him off the sulky in front of him. He took the first opportunity of getting out, and letting U. Scott go to the front, but, although in front, the horse still continued to pull, as he could see the field behind him. The horse had partly choked himself, through his pulling tactics, and, although the driver used the .whip going up the straight, the horse was unable to respond. My sympathies are with my driver, who had a difficult horse to drive on the day, and I am sure that he did what he considered would give him the best chance of winning. Had 'he understood the horse, as we have all learnt from this meeting, Holmes would, no doubt, have driven him differently. My trainer and I discussed this norse for an hour after his poor showing on the second day, and decided that we would run him in a closed bridle on the next occasion, one reason being so that he would not see the field chasing. Also, we suggested to the driver that he should let him run two or three lengths in the front of the field, so that he would not hear the horses after him. U. Scott will be driven in the final in a closed bridle, the same as he used when he won the two miles event. I am of opinion, now that this horse has had three races into him, he will probably go a more generous race in the final. May the best horse win.”
