The Ka’imiro arrived from Wellington at 4 o’clock this morning and is part-loading coal for Wellington, sailing for Greymouth this afternoon to complete the loading. The Wingatui left Wellington at 8 o’clock last night with general cargo for Westport, and is due to-night to load coal for Wellington. The Totara sailed from New Plymouth at 10 o’clock last night and is due to arrive to-night to load coal for Tokomaru Bay to-morrow. The Kakapo is to leave Wellington to-day and is due to-morrow to load coal for Auckland. The Alexander left Lyttelton last night for Westport, and is expected to arrive to-morrow to load coal for Picton. The Titoki has been further delayed at Greymouth and is not expected to arrive until to-morrow to load coal for Nelson. The Titoki is to return from Nelson to load for Tarakohe and Nelson. The Rata is expected to arrive from Greymouth to-morrow to load coal for Wanganui. The Miro sailed for Auckland at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The Te Aroha arrived from Wei lington with general cargo at 9.30 this morning and is expected to sail for Little Wanganui this evening thence back to Wellington. The Canopus sailed with coal for Auckland at 6 o’clock this morning Personal: Mr. Les Upham, of Wellington, is spending his annual holiday in Westport. Buxton, formerly of Westport and now Accountant on the Dunedin staff of the Commercial Bank of Australia, is visiting friends in Westport. Mr. Forsyth, of North Beach, received a cable on Monday from Scotland, relating the death of his . father, Mr. James Forsyth. The late Mr. Forsyth leaves a family of three sons and four daughters. Two sons are residents of this district Mr. Neil Forsyth, of Westport, and Mr. William Forsyth, of Waimangaroa. Mr. Mat Forsyth, of Seddonville, is a brother of deceased. The late Mr. Forsyth was in his 60th. year at the time of his death. Millerton Women’s Institute: The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Rechabite Hall on Wednesday, 2nd. March, Mrs. Corbett presiding over a good attendance. A new member was also enrolled. The motto was read by Mrs. Cunniffe. The roll call, “A Cure for Corns,” was responded to by all, and many and varied were the cures. A very interesting talk on “Food Values” was given by Mrs. Ireland, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. A dainty supper was serv ed by the hostesses, Mesdames Ninnis, Sharp and Anderson. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne” brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Plunket Society: The monthly meeting of the Plunk et Society was held on Friday, 4th. March, at 3 p.m. Present: Miss Harkness (chair), Mesdames Hansen, Kilkenny, Bennie, Levestam, Hagedorn, Shrimpton and Secretary. Apologies were received from Mesaames George and Holdgate. Before commencing the business of the meeting, the President referred t.o the death in Wellington of Sir Truby King, the founder of the Plunket Society. In the course of her remarks. Miss Harkness suggested that a fitting memorial to Sir Truby King would be the carrying on of the work he started. As a mark of respect the members were asked to stand in silence. Mrs. Shrimpton was welcomed to the committee. The Nurse’s report was read adopted. Inward correspondence was received. Accounts amounting to £1 2s fid were passed for payment. A discussion look place on the best method to adopt in the raising of funds towards the new Karitane building at Christchurch, at which Westport patients have received treatment at various times, and it was decided to combine this appeal with the annual Plunket appeal to be held on the 18th. and 19th. March, on the basis of 3d in each shilling collected. The following members were appointed for the annual appeal: Palmerston Street, Mesdames Kilkenny and Hagedorn: Brougham Street: Mrs. L. Morgan; Cobden to Henley: Mrs Holdgate; Beach to Cobden: Mrs. Bennie; Henley to Brougham: Mesdames Todd and George; Brougham to Rintoul: Miss Harkness and Mrs. Smith; Rintoul to Mill: Mesdames Levestam and Shrimpton; Mill to Railway: Miss Harkness. The Ladies’ Committee will be to the fore in catering foi the enjoyment of all, Shipping Men’s Visit: The Managing Director, Mr. Aldag the Australian Superintendent, Capt Koehler,, and Mr. Duckwitz, of the Hamburg Amerika Line, visited Westport yesterday, it is believed, for ths purpose of discussing harbour facil ities with the port authorities. Thf s.s. Gera and the s.s. Anholt, recenl visitors, were in German ownership It is thought that this visit of theii representatives was for the purpose of considering the suitability of the port facilities for larger vessels. The outcome of this visit is looked forward to with interest by those concerned in the coal industry. Nikau General Labourers’ Union: A meeting of the Nikau branch ol the General Labourers’ Union was held in Peggie’s Hall on Sunday. Mr W. Watson was in the chair. The representative read the correspondence. W. Watson was appointed representative, also two of a committee T. Murray and H. Ninnes. It was decided to collect a voluntary subscription of Is 6d per fortnight,' 9d to go for the Labour Party Campaign Fund and 9d for the Spanish Relief, for the duration of the job It was decided to ask the Secretary to come out on the job as soon as possible. Mr. T. Grace, the retiring representative, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services. Magistrate’s Court: In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. R. Ferner, S.M./ a young man, whose name was suppressed, appeared on remand on a charge of forgery, in connection with a cheque purporting to have been drawn by T. E. Price, of Westport. On an application from Constable R. Allen, the accused was further remanded until Tuesday next. In the case, John Kilkenny, Ltd., v. H. Carey, of Birchfield, for the recovery of balance due on the purchase price of a winch, when the Court adjourned this morning, the plaintiff’s case had not been completed, and the

case was -adjourned until next Cour! day. Amateur Athletics: The weekly meeting of the Westport Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held in fine weather with a good number of spectators present Competition was of the usual high standard. Old Boys won the relay with Stars second and Westport third. Rough tactics in this event will be the subject of an enquiry by the Disputes' Committee next Monday night.

D. Strachan and A. Jost shared the nonours in the senior events, while K. Scott was in excellent form to secure two wins in the junior races. Miss Marshall returned to the winning list with two fine efforts. S. Johnson rode well to win both cycle events. Committee Meeting; A meeting of the Management Committee of the Westport Athletic and Cycling Club was held last evening, there being only a small attendance of members. Apologies were received from Messrs D. Luff, W. Atkin, J. Feehan, G. Mitchell and G. Blair. Mr. A. Dey presided and Messrs A. Pain, D. Johnson, S. Daily, M. Head and the Secretary, Miss D. Marshall, were present. Inward correspondence received was dealt with as follows: — From Motueka Amateur Athletic Club, regretting that they would be unable to attend the sports intended to be held on Saturday next, owing to it being a busy day in their district and members were unavailable As the meeting had been cancelled, the letter was received. Mr. M. O’Dea attended at this stage and nanded over a beautiful trophy in the form of a rose bowl, for women’s track events. Members present were profuse in their thanks for this splendid trophy and Mr. Dey, on behalf of the Club, extended tnanks to Mr. O’Dea for the gift. It was decided to frame rules governing the allotment of this Rose Bowl at a later meeting. The trophy is to be named the "O’Dea Rose Bowl.” Next week’s relay will be 880 yards, one 440 yards, one 220 yards, and two 110 yards. Owing to the evenings drawing in, it was decided to commence the sports in future at 6.15 o’clock and the officials were instructed to enforce this time and not wait for competitors’ late arrival. Mr. Pain reported having interviewed Mr. Ellis, of the Reefton High School, at the school sports last week, and had received the promise of his (Mr. Ellis) support in an endeavour to form an Athletic Club in the Reefton district. Mr. Ellis stated that he would be only too pleased to assist and that with the assistance of the school athletes they would have a good foundation for a club in his district. It was decided to write Mr. Ellis, thanking him for the interest taken and promising every support from this Club. A general discussion took place on the running of the footballers’ relay at the meeting last evening, and members were of the opinion that there had been a severe case of jostling at one stage of the race and one team’s chances were ruined as a result. Other breaches of the rules during the event were also commented upon and after further discussion it was decided that the Disputes’ Committee meet on Monday evening next at

6.45 to consider the matter. . This concluded the business of the meeting and with the usual vote to the chair and Mr. Johnson for the use of the room, the meeting adjourned. State School Swiming Sports: The annual swimming sports of the Westport State School were held yesterday afternoon in the Municipal Baths. The sports were run off in good style and some fine performances were put up. The teachers were ably assisted by members of the Westport Swimming Club and the success of the sports was mostly due to their combined efforts. The Boys’ Championship was won by T. McDonald with 17 points, with Benjamin second with 14 points. The winner of the girls’ championship was M. Roselli with 13 points, with R. Todd 9 points second. A creditable performance was put up by T. McDonald in the 100 Yards Championship, his time of 75 secs, being three seconds faster than that registered for the junior- race at tire West Coast Championships:— Results are as follows—Champion-
