BARRYTOWN NOTES
The monthly meeting of the Barry-town-Punakaiki Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, at the residence of Mrs. H. Richards, there being a good attendance. The President, Mrs. B. Russell, welcomed Mrs. Leathley, a visitor from Palmerston North. The meeting opened with a suitable motto, and the secretary (Mrs. Wafer) dealt with the correspondence. It was decided to forward a remit to the annual meeting of the West Coast Federation, to be ueld in Greymouth on April 29, to the effect that a suitable rest room be provided in Greymouth. The secretary was also instructed to write to Mr. Mulcare, Chairman of the Power Board, asking that the electric power be extended to Punakaiki. The monthly competition, plate of best pikelets, resulted: Mrs. Butterworth 1, Mrs. Kennedy 2. The wit sharpener competition was won by Mrs. McLagan. Mrs. Butterworth and Mrs. B. Rus sell gained equal points for the yearly aggregate prize, Mrs. Johnston being third. Mrs. A. Richards won a special prize donated by Mrs. Wafer for the most unsuccessful entrant. The next meeting (annual) is to be held at Mrs. R. Johnston’s residence. During the social hour, afternoon tea was served by the joint hostesses, Mrs A. Richards and Mrs. H. Richards. The annual Institute picnic, held at Punakaiki, was an enjoyable outing, and the following are the results of the sports programme:—loo yards open: E. Russell 1, H. Langridge 2 Married men’s race: E. Russell 1, C Reynolds 2. Single men’s race: W. Ryall 1, P. Wafer 2. Stepping competition (open): R. Johnston. W.I. Ladies: Mrs. S. Wilson. Married Ladies’ Race: Mrs. Howard 1, .Mrs. Russell 2. Single Ladies’ Race: T. Wafer 1, E. Aiken 2. Girls over 5 and under 10 years: Yvonne Free 1, Pat Maloney 2. Boys over 5 and under 10 years: Doug. Duncan 1,1). Sheldon and B. Langridge 2. Small Boys: Brian Rowe 1, Tom Langridge 2. Small Girls: Audrey Wafer 1, Kathleen Aiken 2.
Mrs. McGregor, of Leeston, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. H. G. Warring.
Mrs. E. C. Leathley, Palmerston North, has left on return after spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. J. Ryall. News has been received of the death of Mrs. E. Hamil, Maori Hill, Dunedin, and the sympathy of residents will be extended to her daughter, Mrs. A. V. Nesbit, who has left for Dunedin.
Miss B. Adams, Christchurch, is on a holiday visit to Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Chapman. The Merrymakers’ Ball, held on Saturday night, proved highly successful, visitors being present from Hokitika, Greymouth, Stillwater and Runanga. Music was supplied by the New Marina Orchestra for the long programme of old and modern dances. Novelties were won by Miss V. Downes and partner, Miss T. Wafer and partner, and Mrs. G. Brown and partner. During the evening, Mr. J. Ryall, on benalf of the social committee, made a presentation to Mrs. W- Kennedy, who has left the district to reside in Nelson Creek. Mr. Ryall spoke in eulogistic terms of Mrs. Kennedy, who in the past had rendered valuable services to the social committee by always supplying the music for their functions, and in asking Mrs. Kennedy to accept a handbag as a small token of appreciation, wished her every success.
