MANCHESTER UNITY

annual conference AUCKLAND, March 9. A large increase in the membership and in the benefits paid was revealed in the annual report of the Auckland district of the Manchester United Oddfellows when the conference opened to-day, the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis) welcoming the delegates. Benefits totalling £36,622 had been paid during the year, and this unfolded graphically the story of the value to the community of friendly society work, which was essential to the social well-being of the people or district. The Grand Master, Bro. T. M. Hetet of Te Kuiti, said that the increase in membership during 1937 was the greatest in the history of the lodge, the total benefit membership now standing at 9865. In referring to the national health insurance scheme he said it would appear that lodges could be safely entrusted to administer the extension of their present operations.
