Westport Man’s Solo
[Per Press Association]. PALMERSTON N., February 21. With seven A Grade and eleven B Grade bands competing, the Dominion bands championships commenced this morning with solo competitions. This afternoon a street march and civic reception are being held. The hymn test will be held this evening. Results: — E Flat Soprano Cornet. (Tune: “Kelvin Grove.”) E. Webb (Dunedin Artillery) 82 pts 1 C. C. Hutcheson (Ashburton Silver Band) 80 pts 2 D. Taylor (Timaru Municipal Band) 78 pts ~ 3 Hymn Test. Wanganui Garrison, 141 pts ..... 1 Hawera Municipal, 134 pts * Timaru Municipal, 131 pts d Commenting on the hymn test, the judge, Mr Kerry, said that there was a slight improvement on last year. Judging on the interpretations gw en > it seemed that some conductors had never been in a church. The winning performance .was outstanding, an there were only four bands out of tune, which had been a great fault last year.
