On a charge of cycling without a light in Richmond Quay on February 2nd Harry Minchin was fined 10s with 10s costs in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday.

The Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) left Wellington yesterday for Wairoa. Owing to the flodd disaster at Kapuwhara, Mr Semple has cancelled his visit to the West Coast this week.

One statutory first offender found on licensed premises after hours was fined 5s with 10s costs in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday before'Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. A second offender was fined 5s with 10s costs.

Early yesterday morning, the bread delivery van owned by Mr. Thomas Howson was completely destroyed by fire. Mr. Howson was returning to Greymouth at the time, and was about four miles from Ahaura. The cause of the fire is a mystery.

A further contingent of nineteen men were to have left Hokitika by the m.v. Gael to-day, for Jackson’s Bay, but this number has been reduced to twelve, through the non-ar-rival of seven of eleven men from Canterbury yesterday. The twelve men available will now make the trip.

Commencing on Thursday, an educational tour of the West Coast by Misses Tillsley, Grey and Finlayson, Auckland swimmers, under the auspices of the New Zealand Swimming Council, will be undertaken. The tour, which will last a fortnight, is to include Greymouth, Hokitika, Reefton, Westport and Ross. Coaching with particular attention to school children, is the principal object of the tour. The three swimmers, all of whom are in championship class, will arrive in Greymouth on Thursday.

There was a good attendance of members at a meeting of St. Thomas’s branch of the Mothers’ Union, Runanga. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn took the enrolling service, one new member being enrolled. Mrs Jermyn on behalf of the branch, made a presentation to Mrs Griffiths for her baby. The hostesses were Mesdames Keys, Smith and Kendrick. Archdeacon Jermyn gave an address on the Mothers’ Union Chapels he had visited in England and Scotland. The meeting closed with the Mothers' Union prayer.

A second offender, who pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, was convicted and fined ss, the amount of his bail, at yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, at Greymouth, before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. Senior Sergeant E. Quayle stated that defendant had promised to take out a prohibition order. Another second offender, who did not appear, was fined £l, the amount of his bail. One statutory first offender was fined ss, the amount of his bail. Another offender, who had since been admitted to the Old People’s Home, was convicted and discharged.

The Public Trust Office Statement of January, states that estates of a value of £497,437 were reported and accepted for administration by the Public Trustee during the month. The total value of the estates jjnder administration by the Public Trustee on the 31st March, 1937, was £60,770,814, and the new business for the ten months ended 31st January, 1938, was £4,856,003. Grants of administration made by the Court in favour of the Public Trustee numbered 99 for the month. During the month 327 new wills appointing the Public Trustee executor, were prepared, on behalf of testators and lodged for safe custody, and 254 existing wills were revised to provide for changes desired by testators. The total number of wills now held in the Public Trust Office on behalf of living persons is 89,995.
