iOur Own Correspondent]. . HOKITIKA, February 14. The Greymouth watersiders were more fortunate on Saturday with the weather for their annual picnic at Cass Square than the Brunner excursionists were yesterday. The Square with the sward mown close, presented a fine spectacle on Saturday, and the visitors had a very enjoyable day. Yesterday the weather was wet m the morning, but it improved later, and the outing proved a pleasant one. The death has occurred at Melbourne of Mr Peter Kirwan, a successful business man. and a former resident of Hokitika, where his father. Lawrence Kirwan, was a wellknown business man in the early days- The deceased, who visited here a couple of years ago, leaves among his relatives several cousins in Hokitika. A large black seal was seen on the local beach yesterday morning at the northern end of the town. It was basking on the sand for some time, but made its way to the sea when spectators came too close. After disporting in the waves it again made I its way on to the beach for some time, before it ultimately disappeared. The Gael left yesterday for Jackson’s Bay, and returns to Greymouth for two trips from there to Jackson’s Bav. «• Visitors to Hotel Westland include A. E. The fixtures for next Saturday are in the C Grade, being Kokatahi v. Arahura, at Kokatahi; St. Mary’s v. Jubilee at St. Mary’s; Hokitika a bye., . „ Three trucks of sheep, and one or cattle will be railed to Canterbury freezing works by this evenings goods train. On to-morrow evenings train, there will be 27 trucks of lambs and sheep, and five (rucks of cattle, consigned to the Addington market on Wednesday, and to the Works. , x Uo The new road service between Hokitika and Greymouth, inaugurated by the Railways Department last week, is proving a great convenience to the travelling public. The patronage, so far, has been very «atlsfactory. At its ordinary meeting of the Ross Borough Council the Town Clerk was requested to arrange for a supply of lime rubble for Beach road as early as possible. For the painting of the Coronation Hall, one tender only was received —R. J. Scott, £36 14s. o sideration was deferred till Thursday evening. Two tenders were received for laying ten chains of concrete channelling in Aylmer Street. H. bGrav £8 16s per chain, D. S. Wadsworth £5 9s per chain.—The lowest tender was accepted. The Town ClerK is to arrange for a supervisor for the channelling work. Resolved that further library shelves be erected immediately, and a case be made for storing a number of sports trophies on , hand. Resolved a letter be sent o Cr. Nolan (who is a patient in Westland Hospital' regretting his illness and wishing a speedy recovery. The Town Clerk was granted two weeks leave to attend the Fire Brigade con ference at New Plymouth. The Borough balance-sheet, as returned from the Audit Office, was considered and finally settled. The Audit Department, stated Cr. R. J- Scott was disqualified from acting as a councillor brought about by a breach ol Section 37 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1933,” and therefore must cease to act as a councillor.— Received. Resolved to forward letter of thanks to Mr Scott for his past services. It was decided the vacancy be not filled. The Town Clerk reported J. Anderson had refused to sign an agreement in connection with lease of reserve 1463. It was decidea to give Mr Anderson 14 days in which to sign, and a special meeting be held on 22nd inst. to deal with same. A report from Messrs H. Osmers and W. O. Jones on waterworks stated No. 1 tunnel required several sets of timber, and with a little attention from time to time, it should remain sound for years. They would not recommend concrete pipes be used in the tunnel. All tunnels should be inspected at least once a month and new timber should be silver pine Scrub should be cut back from pipeline in case of fire destroying the silver pine'legs. The report was received approved and adopted. Messrs H Osmers W. O. Jones and James Jones to be thanked for their interest and service. The Treasury notified remittance of £6 10s, goldfield revenue for December. Ross Aero Club asked for permission to erect club rooms on aerodrome. —Consented to with the permission of the Civil Aviation authorities. Traffic Manager of Railways advised that no alteration would be made to the Ross-Hokitika timetable without reference to this Council. Received. Resolved Works and Reserves Committees meet on Thursday (10th inst.) at 7.30 p.m. The first meeting of the year of the Arahura Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs R. Bradley, at the One Mile Hall. In a scone competition Mrs Edwards was first, Mrs Hewlett second and Mesdames Harcourt and Martin third. The best bloom I was won by Mrs Clarke (dahlia) Ist. Mrs J. Bradley (aster) 2nd, Mrs Har'court' (sweet pea) 3rd. A car 1 com- ' petition was won by Mrs Degleish.

There was also a sales table in evidence. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Harcourt and Bradley. Mrs H. Bock has left for Wellington after spending a short holiday on the West Coast. Mrs Bock will leave by the Awatea on Tuesday for Sydney to join the Strathnaver on an extended trip to Great Britain. Miss L. Park, daughter of Mr H. Park, has left to enter the Teachers’ Training College, at Christchurch. W. Jeffries and Co., report having held a successful sale of fat and store cattle and sheep at the Harihari yards on the 10th. A total of 160 head was yarded, comprising fat and forward pows, young cattle and a few steers. All classes met with a good sale, and nearly all lots..were sold by auction. A line of 9 8 m.s. lambs brought 19s, 30. ewe lambs 23s 6d. 20 2-tooth wethers 21s 6d, 16 ewes £l, 9 fat lambs 22s 6d, rams from 1 guinea to 2i gns. Fat cows realised £4 15s to £6. heifers £5 10s to £6 15s, bullocks £6 7s 6d to £7, 18-month steers £3 10s to £4 2s 6d.

An enthusiastic meeting of the Hokitika Sports Club was held recently when there was an attendance of twenty members. The meeting resolved to hold the annual meeting in Hokitika on Saturday, March 26, and to offer good prize-money. Mr H. Kortegast handed in a sum of £22 collected in the town and district. The committee agreed to continue the canvass for subscriptions, as it was necessary to have £6O in hand to guard against wet weather or possible postponement. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr R. Ford; president, Mr J. Taylor; joint secretaries, Messrs G. Adamson and E W. Heenan; vice-presidents, Messrs D. R. Dowell, R. G. Millen, H. Kortegast, W. Stopforth and A. H. Lawn; committee, Messrs C. L. Harper, R. Herring, J. Davern, S. Havill, J. Bannister, S. Moore, D. Breeze, R. Collett, F. McGregor, R. Lynn, J. Phillips, H. Wells, B. Andrews. N. Inglis. H. G. Reid, E. T. Stoop, W. Simpson and T. A. Lynch. Nominations are to close for the sports on March 15. The Gazette announces the appointment of the following members of the Hari Hari Domain Board:—Messrs W •J. Thiele, T. S. Ferguson, T. Kelly, E. A. Kirby, W. Searle, junr., .Mesdames M. Hansen and E.
