N.Z. UNEMPLOYMENT
15,000 Reduction IN PAST YEAR. [Per Press Association]. WELLINGTON, February 10. The latest unemployment return for the period ended January 15, was released to-day by the Minister for Employment (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) and shows that there are more than 15-,000 fewer persons dependent on the funds than at this time last year. The Minister’s statement follows: — “The unemployment return for January 15, 1938, including those on the register who are for health or other reasons unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 15,360, as against the corresponding figure for January 16, 1937. The reduction, compared with the figures for December last, is 311. Details as at January 15, 1938, were:— Registered, but not on relief, 1051; on sustenance, awaiting placement, 4178; on scheme No. 5 relief, 2827, total 8056. On sustenance, totally unfit for employment for health or other reasons, but being afforded relief from the Employment Promotion Fund, 8,000. “For the four-weekly period under review the expenditure from the fund under the heading of the promotion of employment, as distinct from relief expenditure, is estimated at £178,415."
