Westport-Karamea Main Highway. Westport-Mokihinui Section. Dear Sir, —With reference to your letter of November 3 last, in connection with the widening and regrading on the above section, I am now in receipt of a reply from the Hon Minister of Public Works stating that he had conferred with the chairman of the Main Highways Board on the matter of the widening of the above road being continued beyond Hector. He has been pleased to advise that an additional amount of £2,725 has been made available to your Council on a free basis. The approval of course is conditional on satisfactory proposals being submitted to the Main Highways Board by the local authority.

General: iThe monthly Ingleside of Buller Caledonian Society was held last evening when preliminary arrangements were made for a visit to Westport of the Motueka Lady Pipers Band, a brilliant combination which should prove a great attraction as the band, besides being composed of classy pipers, also have amongst its members some fine vocal and dancing talent. , . At a meeting of the District Committee, approval was given to the Westport Jockey Club’s programme for April 8 and 11, the stakes for which total £1,400 with a silver cup and several silver-mounted whips.

Millerton Dispute: Millerton mine was idle on Monday and again yesterday, owing to a dispute because of the non-payment of a miner who went home on Friday morning owing to his clothes not being dry when he reached the company’s bath-house to start work.

Rowing: Kawatiri Rowing Club commenced their club fours last evening when a crew stroked by Doncliffe defeated a crew stroked by Fraser by two lengths. C. Foote’s crew secured a default and will row off the final with Doncliffe’s crew this evening.

Karamea School: The Championship Shield awarded by Nelson Education Board to Karmea School was on Monday presented to the Board Chairman (Hon. W. H. Mclntyre). The trophy is for the school with the best environment last year. Karamea and Rawaka schools were placed equal and will each hold the shield for six months. Mr. McIntyre claimed that the standard set by the board for the award c-f an environment certificate is a very high one. Notwithstanding this fact, however, no less than 56 schools at the present time hold environment certificates. Eleven hold first class, 11 second class and 34 third class. -He regretted Mr. Johnston, headmaster during last year, was not present to personally reap the fruits of his labour. Mr. Mclntyre congratulated the school in reaching the top and asked the acting headmaster, Mr. Lumsden, to accept the shield. Mr. Lumsden said the pupils were very proud of gaining first place. They would strive hard to again reach the top next year and retain the shield. Three rousing cheers by the pupils /for Mr. Johnston terminated a very pleasant function.
