Serious injuries were sustained by Miss Ann Faulkner, of Kaiata, when she was thrown from a horse on the Omoto Road on Tuesday evening. She was rendered unconscious, but was last evening reported to be progressing satisfactorily.

The combined Reefton-Waiuta picnic was held yesterday at Greymouth, the excursion train from Reefton carrying 527 passengers (525 adults and 202 children).. The visitors were favoured with beautiful weather and spent on enjoyable day at the Municipal Baths, Victoria Park and the Blaketown beach. The train left on return at 6.5 p.m.

A fracture of the right hip was sustained by Thomas Lamberton, aged 65, when he suffered a heavy fall on the Cobden bridge, while cycling, borne from Greymouth to Cobden, about- 11.30 o’clock yesterday morning. He was carrying a box containing groceries, on the handle-bars of the cycle, and the machine apparently got out of control He was conveyed to the Grey Hospital by ambulance. Last''evening he was reported to be progressing satisfactorily.

At Te Kinga on Tuesday a new vessel to tow barges and logs on LakeBrunner was christened and launched by Mrs W. R. Carey, wife of the chairman of directors of United Sawmills, Ltd., for which company the craft was constructed. The vessel Was built at the lakeside by Miller, Tunnage and Company, of Port Chalmers, and was christened Tikinui. It is about 50 feet long and has a beam of about 12 feet. Powered by a petrol engine, it will replace a smaller steam launch. The mills of the company were closed and there was a large gathering of employees and visitors for the ceremony. Ltd., Tainui Street. —AdvtAs the result of a collision between a taxi, owned and driven by Mr Walter Fattorini, of Reefton, and the Golden Coast Dairy Factory’s cream delivery lorry, driven by Mr John Skinner, in the vicinity of Ngahere, yesterday morning, a passenger in the taxi, Mrs McMahon, wife of Mr John McMahon, of Big River, sustained a broken arm, a dislocated ellow, and she also suffered from bruising and shock. Dr. J. L. Wicken, of . Reefton, attended the injured person', who was removed to the Reefton Hospital, and last evening she was reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The driver of the taxi and Mrs McMahon's son, sustained slight injuries to their chest, shock and slight bruising. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. The taxi j was proceeding towards Greymouth and the lorry towards Reefton.

Charged that on or about October 23, 1937, at Greymouth, he did, with intent to defraud, obtain the sum of £5O from Harry Digby James by means of a certain false pretence, a Valueless cheque for that amount, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, at Temuka, John Brewer, alias David Ackroyd, a farmer, appeared on remand from Auckland, in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday. Detective-Sergeant H. E. Knight stated that it was a criminal charge and asked for a remand until Monday next. In reply to Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., he said that he hoped to proceed on that day, although he did not know accused’s intentions. The remand was granted, and accused asked for bail. DetectiveSergeant Knight said that if bail was granted he would ask that it be substantial. Accused, since the warrant was issued, had got as far as Auckland, and had changed his name. When seen, he denied that his name was Brewer, and it was not until sufficient correspondence had been found in his effects, that he admitted his identity. Nothing was known of him here. Bail was granted, in self and one surety of £250, accused to report daily to the police.

Vinsen’s Ambassadors Novelty Band of Stratford, headed by Mr. Albert

(“Snowie”) Vinsen, will arrive in Greymouth on March 1 to commence a tour of the West Coast. They will be heard over the air from 2ZB, Wellington, on February 19, from 6.15 to 6.30 and 7.30 to 7.45 p.m., and will open their Greymouth season at Schaef’s Hall. “Snowie,” who formerly resided in Greymouth, was an old member of the Grey Battalion Band, and West Coasters-will remember his work in organising entertainments to enable the band to visit the Christchurch Exhibition in 1906. In addition to the West Coast, Vinsen’s Ambassadors will embrace Nelson and Marlborough in their tour. The band is regarded as the most popular dancing combination in Taranaki, and for some years has been engaged every Saturday night at the Agricultural Hall, New Plymouth’s biggest dance hall.
