Racing Notes

Riders at Wingatui: Some riding engagements for today’s programme at Wingatui are as’follows:—J. Jennings, Sea Fox, Adina, Ortyx, Pink Robe; G. Humphries, Paper Slipper, Mulatto, Good Passage; A. E. Ellis, Silver Streak, Passaform; L. J. Ellis, Good Sun, Roseman, Combat, Raeburn, Quick Return, Salient Knight; H. Hibberd. Studley Royal, Lumiere.

Wingatui: , Convivial pulled up very lame after her race on Saturday, and has been returned by P. McGrath to her owner. Royal Amphora also showed the effects of his race, and was not sent to Wingatui. Others who have had their trips cancelled are Great Bram ble, Scuffle and Bright Prospect.

A Cup Favourite: Milford, who promises to be Southland’s strongest representative in thei Dunedin Cup, ran two excellent races at Invercargill at New Year, and was finishing on so well each day at the end of 10 furlongs that there should be little doubt regarding his ability to see out a mile and a-half.

Good Looking Novice: A three-year-old gelding, who will race as Tantivi, has attracted attention on the Riccarton tracks of late. He is by Hunting Song from Grey Eyes, a sister to Knocklyn and Lancer, and is one of H. Nurse’s team. Tantivi has plenty of size, and it was on this account that he was not commissioned earlier.

Prefers Easy Going: Although Tybalt was allowed to fo -e '0 his engagement in the Matamata Cup. there is nothing wrong with the Romeo gelding, who has seldom looked better than at present. On account of the "hard ground Tybalt has done no racing recently, but he has been kept in regular work and, as soon as the going becomes easier, F. Gilchrist should be able to place the gelding to advantage.

Showed Promise: Among the local maidens produced at the Takapuna meeting, those who appeared likely to improve in the near future are Inquisitor, Asset and Lapidarian. The first-named displayed definite improvement on anything he has yet shown either in public or in private. He is a halfbrother to Parquet by Lysander. and his recent form augurs well for future engagements. Asset raced on the first day only and was prominent throughout and eventually finished well up. This was her best effort since her arrival here, and. if her present rate of progress is maintained she may not be hard to place to advantage in similar company.

Palustre: Palustre finished fourth in both sprint events, at the Takapuna meeting at Ellerslie and with a Uttle luck in the running may have been a good deal closer in both instances. The Tea Tray filly x has been racing most consistently since the beginning of the season and she should add to her already attractive list of five successes before the season is much further advanced. She has been nominated for the Rotorua meeting.

Aynho: Although she ran unplaced in her only start, Aynho shaped very creditably at Thames recently and left the impression that she is likely to win in novice company shortly. Trained by E. A. Keesing at Te Aroha, Aynho is a three-year-old filly by Surveyor from The Saolinv. by Snai peen from Lady Gwen, and traces back, to the very successful mare Juliet, ancestress of many good winners.

Breeding of Sergia: Sergia, winner of the Taranaki Cup, was bred in Hawke’s Bay by Mr. Frank Ormond and was trained early in her career for her breeder by F. Davis at Woodville. She is now raced on lease by Mr. H. E. Gladirig, who trains her at Te Rapa. Sergia is a five-year-old mare by Lord Quex from Sunny Hours, by Leighton—Los Vegas, by Boniform -La Valiere. It is a good family, which has produced some fine horses

in the past. The lease of Sergia expires at the end of the present season. Desert Gold’s family by name I alone is sufficient to quicken the interest of racegoers and Sudan, win- . ner of the Ngamotu Juvenile Handi- • •w, claims attention from the fact that she is not only a Beau Pere, but is also out of a daughter of Desert Gold. Sudan resembles Desert Gold probably more than any , of her descendants to date. She is a well-grown filly who looks like reaching good class. N.Z. TROTTING ASSOCIATION. ; - — i GOLDEN MONESS CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, February 9. At a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association held last evening, there were present: ] Messrs H. W Kitchingham (chairman), J. R. McKenzie, J. B. Thomson, and. the Hon. W. Hayward, M.L.C . The Australian Trotting League. i wrote advising the disqualification of 1 A. F. Huelin and R. Jamieson for six i months because of the running of Les i Huon on December 27; H. C. Webb for six months for the running of Franz Borneo on December 11; and ( H. H. Bodey and the horse Pyrmont Peter for six months for the running ( of the horse on January 15. The actions of the different bodies were endorsed. The Westport Trotting Club re- ■ ported having fined E. G. Eden, driver ; of Golden Moness, £lO for careless driving at the meeting held in De- < cember. Golden Moness, according to the evidence, had cut across her field too quickly and because of this several horses had been brought down. It was resolved to endorse the action of the club in fining Eden, and it i was decided to reduce him from an A ] to a B grade driver. i The deaths of the following horses ] were reported:—Childwood, Cynara, I Dark Audubon, Fairhaven, Guy Nut, St. Bridget, St. Petrox, Twos Loose ’ and Zola. Registrations of the American-bred horses, Worthy Belwyn by Belwyn— Marie Axworthy, and Mackscot (formerly Getaway) by Peter Volo—Lydia Lee, were approved, but it was decided to ask the applicant for the ‘ registration of Estrapade to find a more suitable name. FIELDS MADE TO ORDER. CHRISTCHURCH, February 9. ' The building up of fields with horses that have not been accepted for is a common practice with certain clubs, but at last night’s meeting of ; the board of the New Zealand Trot- ‘ ting Association a report from the Wairarapa Trotting Club said that a protest had been entered because a horse that had been reported scratch - ed was allowed to start. 1 The protest came from Mr. J. Flanagan,- owner of Activity, who said that he had been induced to start his horse because Superior Rank, a winner egrlier in the "day, had been scratched. In his evidence before the blub, Flanagan said that his horse would not have been in the race had he known that Superior Rank was going to be a starter. He had learned from the secretary of the Club that Superior Rank had been scratched. The name of the Canterbury horse had been deleted from the list of starters. The case was fully considered bv members of the board, and although it. was stated that verbal instruction had been given to withdraw Superior Rank the Rules of Trotting required confirmation in writing. This had not been given. Members expressed the opinion that there had been some neglect on the club’s part. It was a practice of some clubs to attempt to make their programmes attractive by the inclusion of certain horses that were not likely to start, a very doubtful procedure from any point of view, and one that should be discouraged. The action af the club in dismissing the protest was endorsed, but it was decided to advise the secretary of the ■club that the practice of inducing owners to start their horses to make up a field should be discouraged. RACING FIXTURES. February 10, 12—Dunedin Jockey Club. February 10, 12 —Egmont Racing Club. February 10, 12—Poverty Bay Turf Club. TROTTING FIXTURES. February 12—Canterbury Park i Trotting Club. I , February 12, 16—Auckland Trotting ; Club.
