December 20—11.59 a.m.; —• Shipping: . , „ * , The Canopus arrived from Auckland at noon yesterday, and is expected to be despatched for Auckland to-morrow morning. The Te Aroha is to sail this evening from Wellington with general cargo for Westport and Little Wanganui. The Titoki is scheduled to sail at 1 p.nu to-day for New Plymouth, returning here about Thursday to load back for New Plymouth. The Nikau sailed for Nelson at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. The Rata is due to arrive here from Tarakohe on Friday, 17th inst., to load for Wanganui. The Totara is in port, and is expected to sail for Lyttelton at 4 a.m. in the morning.

The Wingatui is up to sail at 4 a.m. to-morrow for Wellington, returning about the week-end. The Kartigi,. replacing the Kaimiro, is due to-morrow from Kioreroa to load for Auckland. The Poolta is due from Timaru to load here next Saturday for Welling- 1 ton.

The Totara is due to return from Lyttelton to load again on Monday, 20th, for Lyttelton. The Kalingo is due from Akaroa to load here on Monday, 20th, for Auckland.

The Wingatui is due to return from Wellington to load here again on Monday, 20th. for Wellington. The Kiwitea is due here about Thursday, 23rd. to load timber for Sydney. Personal:

Mrs Ward, of Fairdown, who has been on a visit to the North Island, has returned to Westport. Mr W. F. Bucknell, who has been receiving medical treatment in Christchurch, returned to Westport on Saturday.

Miss D. Strachan, a student of the Teachers’ Training College, Christchurch, returned to Westport on Saturday. Miss Miles arrived from Dunedin on Saturday on transfer to the local clerical branch of the Public Works Department. Messrs Bill McNamara and Bill Ryan journeyed to 'Reefton on Saturday for the trotting meeting, and benefited financially and otherwise by their day’s outing. Miss M. Webb, of Hastings, is spending holidays with friends in Westport. The engagement is announced oi Mollie Doreen, second daughter of Mr and Mrs G. H. Gaskell. Romilly Street, Westport, and William Henry, younger son of Mr and Mrs J. Watt, Brougham Street,_Westj2prt._ Members of the railway staff met on Saturday to farewell Mr Cadman, yard foreman, who leaves shortly on transfer to Christchurch. A presentation was made by Mr F. Woodward, who spoke of the fine qualities possessed by Mr Cadman, and wished him the best of luck in his new position. These sentiments were heartily endorsed by Messrs G. Fanzelow, R. Butterfield, F. Kaye, E. Evans, C. Douthett, and others. Mr Cadman suitably replied. Mr and Mrs W. Samuels, who have been visiting Auckland, returned to Westport on Saturday evening. Nurses Maddison and McEwan, who have been undergoing a training course in the Christchurch Hospital, have returned to Westport. Miss Moynihan arrived from Auckland on Saturday on a visit to her sister, Mrs M. Neil. Misses K. and J. McLellan and Master Gordon McLellan returned from Christchurch on Saturday.

Labour Representation Committee: A fully representative meeting of delegates was held in the Labour Rooms on Saturday morning, and matters of importance in connection with the Labour movement were dealt with.

The matter of' divisional areas and area officers was fully discussed, and finally referred to the National Executive. s

It was decided that the committee request all organisations to assist in the distribution of the pamphlet entitled “What New Zealand Labour Has Done For You?”

The nominations of the following persons for positions as National officers and executives were supported, and the nominations submitted to the National Executive for consideration: President, Mr J. O’Brien, M.P.; vicepresident, Mr J. Roberts; secretarytreasurer, Mr D. Wilson, M.L.C.; central executive, Mr P. M. Butler, Mrs Semple, Mr R. Holland, Mrs Lee. Mr T. Brindle, M.L.C.; divisional area officer, Mr A. H. McKane. Matters regarding voting, represenation, mining, reafforestation, the preservation of same, abolition of . the Upper House, compensation legislation, were lengthily discussed, and remits on the various points were framed to be submitted for consideration. Congratulatory references were made by various speakers concerning the progressive social legislation of the Labour Government, and a motion which was unanimously supported was placed on the minute book:. “That this fully-representative meeting of the Labour Representation Committee heartily commends the Government on the recently enacted legislation during the session just concluded, and wish them every success in their further proposed measures for the amelioration of the social welfare of the people of New Zealand as a whole, and we retain our utmost confidence in the policy of the Labour Government. Trotting Notes: . The rain on Saturday left the Westport Trotting Club’s track in nice order for Sunday morning's work. Brian Boru, Red Glow, Black Marble were first to work. They were restricted to jogging exercise. Travis Queen and John Worthy in hopples paced a couple of miles at three-quarter pace, both horses working well. Parallax was working in saddle, and paced exceedingly well, staying on much better than she has been of late.

Crinoline, Silk Attire, and High Noon worked a mile in hopples, and although- they did not go fast, all three paced very freely. Doubt was worked a mile and a

half, and was keen to go faster. This horse is very well.

Passport, looking very fit, was the last horse to work; he paced a mile and a half the reverse way round, and paced very well. The Buller Owners’ and Breeders 1 Association have decided to put on two races for its matinee meeting on the evening of Tuesday, the 21st, the classes being a 2.27 mile and a 3.4 mile and a quarter. As there is a li’<«lihood of some of the visiting horses taking part in these races, a great deal of interest will be taken in this meeting.

Mr R. Hogan, of the firm of Fulton and Hogan, road contractors, of Dunedin, together with his efficient staff, have returned to Westport to complete the work of tar-sealing some of the streets of the borough. This work was practically completed last year, but, owing to the weather conditions, certain portions had to be left over. The firm has added further up-to-date facilities to their already efficient road-making machinery. Tennis:

The Westport Tennis Club journeyed to Granity during the week-end, and played an inter-club match with the Granity Club. After a keen but enjoyable series of games, the result ended in a draw—9 matches and 91 games each. A shower of rain delayed the progress of the game. Results of these matches are not available but will be published in a later issue. The Stockton Club was unable to fulfil their fixture, and forfeited to •Westport B team. Now that the teams competitions have commenced, it is to be hoped that members of the Stockton Club will take a keen interest in their club affairs, and place a team in the field equal or stronger than their team of last season.

Women’s Institutes: The Granity Women’s Institute recently celebrated its second birthday in the Anglican Hall, when Mrs. Hopkinson presided over a large number Prizes were won by the following: Monte Carlo, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Potter; Statue Barn Dance, Miss Carroll and partner; and the jelly competition by Miss Fitzsimmons. Item-, were rendered by Mrs. Masterson, “The Sentimental Bloke,” duet oy Mesdames Pollock and Gennon, Scotch recitation by Mrs. Brown, and a play reading by Mesdames Potter, Moynihan and G. Rennie and Misses Chesterman and Batchelor. Mrs. Hopkinson, reviewing the year's work, thanked the committee for the help they had given, especially mentioning the secretary, Mrs. M. Rennie, whom she asked to accept a box of handkerchiefs from the institute in recognition of her work. Points prizes for the year were awarded as follows: Miss Dowgray 1, Mrs. M.
